Gladius’s Heartbreaking Lore Has Nightfarers Calling It the New Sif

Elden Ring Nightreign‘s connection to the Dark Souls series is strictly limited to fan service and bosses appearing from the latter to fill out content. With the return of iconic Dark Souls bosses such as The Nameless King and The Duke’s Dear Freja, it was theorised that the game may have some ties to the Dark Souls universe.

Alas, theories remain theories, but players have discovered a similarity between a Nightreign boss and a Dark Souls boss. Both have lore capable of making a grown Nightfarer cry, and both bosses are wolves, so the comparison makes sense, but it doesn’t end there.

Gladius from Elden Ring Nightreign and Sif from Dark Souls are lore cousins

Gladius, Beast of Night in Elden Ring Nightreign, is a huge three-headed wolf boss that carries around a greatsword on a chain. Does the wolf carrying a sword part ring a bell? It should, because the Great Grey Wolf Sif used to do exactly that in the first Dark Souls game, although he carried a sword in his mouth.

This is just a surface-level comparison, but when you delve into the lore of both the wolves, they share the same trait: heartbreak. For starters, Sif in Dark Souls was the partner of Artorias the Abysswalker. But his Abysswalking days soon came to an end after he was defeated in a battle against Manus, Father of the Abyss.

His left arm was broken as a result of the fight, and in his final act, Artorias used his Greatshield to protect Sif before ultimately meeting his demise. Sif, after losing him, became adamant on guarding his companion’s grave and ring with a sword to save others from suffering Artorias’ fate.

Of course, that didn’t stop you from slaughtering the pup in a bleak boss battle in Dark Souls. But the community loves him because of his loyalty to Artorias, even after his death, and his wish to protect players from suffering his companion’s fate. It’s wholesome yet depressing.

Gladius’ lore in Elden Ring Nightreign is kind of similar, as it seized the sword of a man who took the three-headed beast in, hence becoming its partner. Wolf pups that carry around a sword that they received from their companions? They’re clearly lore twins, or cousins in this case, and no wonder players are making this connection.

After finding out Gladius’ lore in Elden Ring Nightreign, players on the Nightreign subreddit are calling it the Sif of the game, as both meet their end at the hands of Nightfarers.

Victories often come at a cost, and the similarity between Gladius and Sif proves that bosses aren’t always the bad guys. But it is what it is.

Is Elden Ring Nightreign connected to Dark Souls?

Elden Ring Nightreign does feature plenty of bosses from Dark Souls, and from the similarity between the Gladius and Sif above, you can clearly see the influences. But unfortunately, they aren’t directly connected. The Dark Souls connection is limited to the bosses appearing in it for content.

Since Nightreign is smaller in scope, it makes sense for FromSoftware to reuse assets, and that includes reusing bosses from other titles. Game director Junya Ishizaki previously explained in an

that the intent behind adding Dark Souls bosses was “to suit the gameplay of Nightreign and to make sure they felt at home.”

Another reason that he stated for adding bosses from previous titles was that he “thought it’d be kind of fun”, and that is something we can wholeheartedly respect.

So, what do you think about the similarities between Gladius and Sif from Dark Souls in Elden Ring Nightreign? Do you think Nightreign and Dark Souls are connected, or is it just a coincidence? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
