****** Panther Is Out, but EA’s 3-Game Deal With Marvel Is Still Locked and Loaded

Gamers were treated to some rather unfortunate news recently, wherein Electronic Arts announced the cancellation of its in-development ****** Panther game. This game has been entirely scrapped, which is a shame since it looked really interesting.

Thankfully, EA does seem to be on track to release more Marvel-licensed video games, which include a yet unnamed Iron Man title. The news sits in stark contrast to the ongoing cancellations, but is still considerably ‘good’ news.

Marvel confirms that its 3-game agreement with Electronic Arts is still a go

For the uninitiated, Electronic Arts recently announced that both the unreleased ****** Panther game and its developer, Cliffhanger Games, have been entirely shut down, with all of its projects in the pipeline being canned indefinitely.

The ****** Panther project was described as ‘stunning and amazing’, and reportedly had the involvement of the Skrulls in it, while players took on the role of T’Challa’s son – Azari.

This comes right after the company decided to cancel a string of projects, one of which included an unknown Titanfall game, which has left a sour taste in players’ mouths.

Interestingly, EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, recently talked about ‘moving away’ from ‘future licensed IPs’ – which makes recent events all the more sense. EA is rapidly evolving its strategies and reshaping itself for better or worse.

However, as per a recent report from Marvel, EA is apparently still committed to releasing more Marvel video games, and nothing should ideally change. The titles are expected to be single-player adventures, with a heavy focus on narrative.

The first of these upcoming titles is the Iron Man game, whose development is being led by Motive Studios, which was behind the amazing Dead Space remake. There’s also another World War 2-themed title in the works, featuring both Captain America and ****** Panther (Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra) – and it releases next year.

The third and final title confirmed to be in development would be Marvel’s Wolverine, which is being developed by Insomniac Studios, who developed the spectacular Marvel’s Spider-Man games for the PS5 and PC.

These 3 titles are expected to be released short term, but we really don’t know about any long-term projects just yet. It is still very likely that there are games in active development, at EA or otherwise.

Marvel still has a lot of cards up its sleeve

Bad news aside, there still seem to be plenty of Marvel games up for release in the near future. Fans of the comics’ IP were treated to multiple teasers for upcoming projects, such as a Blade game, which is being developed by Bethesda Softworks.

This is not counting already released titles, such as the rather excellent Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel’s Midnight Suns. While the former is your typical action-adventure, blockbuster ‘cinematic’ game, Midnight Suns is a bit unique.

The game closely follows the XCOM series in terms of gameplay, with cards being used instead of your usual abilities. As such, Marvel has plenty of good games and IPs to go on with – they just need better execution and planning.
