Durham Court, in Hebburn on Tyneside, which was built in 1974, is now “beyond its original intended lifespan”, South Tyneside Council said. The 18-storey block needs repairs costing about £12m and, over the years, others in the town have been demolished. Councillors are recommended to approve bringing down the block with a decision due to be made at a cabinet meeting later. The council’s deputy leader, Jane Carter, said it recognised demolition “would be a huge upheaval to the tenants, and we are here to support them throughout the process”.
