Durham Court residents’ future goes before council

Nearly 100 older people living in a town’s last remaining high-rise block of flats have been told they could lose their homes and treasured community.

Durham Court, in Hebburn on Tyneside, which was built in 1974, is now “beyond its original intended lifespan”, South Tyneside Council said.

The 18-storey block needs repairs costing about £12m and, over the years, others in the town have been demolished.

Councillors are recommended to approve bringing down the block with a decision due to be made at a cabinet meeting later.

The council’s deputy leader, Jane Carter, said it recognised demolition “would be a huge upheaval to the tenants, and we are here to support them throughout the process”.
