Elden Ring Nightreign is finally out, and unfortunately, it is not what many gamers were expecting it to be. This is not something FromSoft is facing for the first time, but with closed network tests and tons of feedback pre-launch flowing in this time around, one really can’t help but wonder what went wrong.

Don’t get me wrong—Nightreign’s concept and overall craft are simply amazing. However, it has a few flaws that can’t be ignored. Offering his own perspective on the situation, a FromSoft executive has even shared what he thinks about the game going out of its way in a few key aspects and how players are eventually going to grow into it.

FromSoft’s latest release is in the headlines everywhere. Unfortunately, it is all for the wrong reasons. The game has even dropped to ‘mixed’ ratings on Steam, showcasing how the issues faced are not limited to just a specific group of players, but are rather widespread across the player base.

These issues include, but are not limited to, the absence of any form of communication mechanic in the game despite being a co-op title, and the unbelievably hard difficulty balancing against those who decide to dive into Limveld solo.

Talking about how, after players supposedly overcome ‘the initial hurdle,’ they will start liking the game eventually, Yasuhiro Kitao, a producer at FromSoft, posted the following on his official X timeline.

As with ******’s Souls or Sekiro, it may be confounding at first, but just like those games, Nightreign offers its own challenges and experiences.
Once you overcome the initial hurdle, it’ll surely provide a sense of accomplishment that’s also its very own.

The producers talk about how, as it was with ******’s Souls or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the game will quite possibly feel overwhelming the first few times you fire it up. He also states, in true Hidetaka Miyazaki fashion, how after getting adapted to the struggles, Nightreign is sure to bring a ‘sense of accomplishment that’s also its very own.’

The world of Elden Ring Nightreign, which takes place on a map called Limveld, takes place in a universe parallel to the original game that came out in 2022. As I said before, many fans held high expectations from the game, and FromSoft still has a chance to save this sinking ship, as it’s not too late.

The studio has already promised a patch next week that will help solo players have a better time against some of the hardest enemies these gamers have ever seen. The changes include increasing the amount of runes gained and adding an “Automatic Revival Upon Defeat” mechanic that allows the player to revive once per night’s boss battle.

Elden Ring Nightreign is the only Souls game in ages that Hidetaka Miyazaki has not directed. The fact that the game is getting a lot of backlash right now might just prove that a FromSoft game made without his direct oversight is doomed to fail.

However, the renowned director has stated in the past that bringing different directors to the table helps bring great ideas to the table that otherwise wouldn’t have seen the light of day.
