(WROC) — Western New York could be in for a treat Sunday night, June 1, as a G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm is expected to light up the skies with a display of the northern lights. Credit: NOAA Thanks to a strong coronal mass ejection from the sun, the northern lights may be visible for New York State and even south of the state. A G4-level storm could mean seeing vibrant auroras, but unfortunately, we all know how these forecasts can go sometimes. For us back here in Rochester, skies are forecasted to be mostly clear, giving us a pretty good visibility to potentially see the lights. The best time to look is between 10pm and 3am. Make sure to head to a dark, rural area, away from city lights and look north. Stay tuned for more updates! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
