It’s a mix of joy and excitement for fresh new content, but if you’re a Vanguard in this new season update, it might as well be a cruel twist of fate for you. Marvel Rivals has been the talk of the town for a while now, and with the new Season 2.5 update, players are more excited than ever for the addition of Ultron to the roster. While most players are celebrating with joy and excitement, Vanguard players are crying in the corner because of how NetEase literally made them all kind of useless. Let’s delve deeper into this. Marvel Rivals’ new season update sidelines Vanguard players Marvel Rivals is currently one of the best hero shooter games in the entire market. The game, developed by NetEase Games, was released back in December of 2024, and as of February 2025, the game has reached over 40 million players. While the developers have consistently bombarded us with a flurry of new updates and heroes, this particular Season 2.5 update has, for all intents and purposes, nailed the coffin shut for Vanguard players. With Ultron invading the lineup in Marvel Rivals, players are already confused whether he’s a Strategist as the developers intended or a Duelist as the fans want, and him being a perma-flier hero has led to bringing back the flying hero meta. This is especially bad news for the Vanguard or tank players because they have no way to counter flying heroes except with heroes like Hulk or Doctor Strange. While the persistent threat of flying heroes has always been a pain for Vanguards, it was a manageable irritation because perma-fliers were typically Duelists (damage dealers). Their high-flying acts came with a built-in drawback, which is limited access to consistent healing from their ground-bound Strategists. But now, with the introduction of a permanent flying Strategist, those airborne DPS players are set to become utterly overpowered. Being a perma-flier, Ultron can easily provide continuous healing to other airborne characters, almost guaranteeing an increase in players flocking to Iron Man, Storm, and Human Torch. The Vanguard population is dropping because of this new meta This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up | Image Credits: NetEase Games All this ends up putting Vanguards in a tougher sport in Marvel Rivals. With more and more flying heroes dominating the skies, tanks are being pushed further out of the fight, and with the addition of Ultron, now giving those DPS players constant support from above, the matter has now turned more frustrating than fun for the tanks. This issue has been brewing in the game for a while now, with fewer players picking the Vanguard role, and this update might have made things even worse. While a fix like adding a short cooldown or stamina limit to the flying abilities, similar to Pharah in Overwatch 2, would make the situation better, the way things are looking, that might not be possible in the near future.
