Cancelled ****** Panther Game Nearly Revived a Beloved Mechanic From Monolith’s Middle-Earth Duology

We are not even halfway through the year, and the games industry is already rife with studio closures and game cancellations. The latest addition to that tally is EA’s Cliffhanger Games, along with its in-development ****** Panther title. The game was part of a three-title deal between EA and Marvel.

It promised not only a fresh take on the Wakandan legacy but also a creative revival of one of the most acclaimed and criminally underutilized mechanics in gaming: the Nemesis System. Now, that innovation is once again locked away, and the potential it held has been buried alongside the canceled project.

EA’s ****** Panther game was promising, until it wasn’t

Cliffhanger Games, founded in 2021 by former Monolith developers, was developing ****** Panther as part of EA’s three-game deal with Marvel (via

No official explanation has been given. Whether it was development challenges, budget issues, or shifting priorities, the cancellation came as a major blow to the fans and to the developers who had high hopes for the project.

What’s most frustrating is what we’ll never get to experience: Cliffhanger was reportedly (via

Instead of violating the patent, which lasts until 2036, the studio was finding innovative ways to replicate the system’s core appeal: personalized enemy rivalries and dynamic progression, all within legal limits.

That ambition, combined with a fresh Marvel setting and new gameplay twists (like shapeshifting Skrulls), made ****** Panther one of the more intriguing superhero projects in development. Unfortunately, we’ll never see how far that vision could have gone.

A brilliant system locked behind a patent wall

First introduced in 2014’s Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor by Monolith Productions, the Nemesis System was a groundbreaking feature that made enemies remember your actions, forming grudges, rising through ranks, and returning with scars and personal vendettas.

It gave players a living, reactive world where every encounter felt personal and dynamic. The system returned in 2017’s Shadow of War, but has been absent from other games ever since, largely due to a 2016 patent by Warner Bros. that protects it until 2036.

Ironically, Warner Bros. has done little with the system since patenting it. Monolith itself had plans to reintroduce it in a Wonder Woman game, but with the game being cancelled and the studio now reportedly shut down, even that effort may be gone.

****** Panther was one of the rare serious attempts to creatively sidestep the patent and bring the Nemesis concept back to life. Its cancellation doesn’t just cost us a game, it delays the evolution of one of gaming’s most promising storytelling tools.
