And CD Projekt RED has one more gift in store for fans of the critically acclaimed RPG. Cross-platform mod support is finally coming to consoles. For the first time, players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will be able to access a shared modding ecosystem alongside PC users. Cross-platform modding isn’t really something that’s super common, but for a game with this much of a legacy, it’s really no surprise that CDPR decided to do it. There is so much history to relive and even better experiences for new fans. As usual, though, the Nintendo Switch won’t be a part of this party. The Witcher 3 is getting one last update, and it’s big Set to launch later in 2025, this final patch celebrates The Witcher 3’s 10th anniversary by rolling out cross-platform mod support. CD Projekt RED confirmed that the update would use mod.io, a platform that allows for the creation, upload, and download of mods across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles. Importantly, the mod support comes at no extra cost, but it will not extend to the Nintendo Switch. And given the fact that CDPR didn’t even mention the upcoming Switch 2, we can expect it to remain closed off to Nintendo’s consoles for the future. The PC version of The Witcher 3 has supported mods for a long time now, with platforms like Nexus Mods and Steam Workshop. But this update levels the playing field by letting console gamers finally access the depth of community content. It’s a big deal in the life cycle of a game that recently reported over 60 million copies sold and continues to be a hit among fans. ‘THE WITCHER 3’ has reached 60 million copies sold This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up — ScreenTime (@screentime) This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up The update also introduces tools for mod creators to ensure compatibility across platforms. An important thing to note is that console players can only download mods. All mod creation must still be done on PC using CDPR’s REDkit, which is an advanced toolset that was released in 2023 to give modders the same development framework used internally. Despite launching in 2015, The Witcher 3 has had a huge fanbase and player community till today, and this is in support of that legacy. A move like this is what could bring the game to an even longer-lasting legacy, like Skyrim. However, there are some limitations. Mods available through mod.io will be subject to platform-specific guidelines and CDPR’s own fan content policies. While many mods will become accessible across all three platforms, not every mod will make the leap. Script-based mods, in particular, must be created using the official REDkit tool and are only supported on PC. As we wait for more news about The Witcher 4, this final patch for The Witcher 3 serves as a reminder of just how iconic Geralt’s legacy is. With over 170 million mod downloads on Nexus Mods alone, players have kept the game alive long after its official content roadmap ended. With this upcoming change, a new generation of players may discover entirely new ways to experience the Continent. Will you be playing The Witcher 3 again anytime soon?
