CDPR Devs Reveal Balancing Struggles During The Witcher 3’s Development In the video game design world, gating is a feature that is used to create invisible barriers. For instance, a cut-down tree is blocking the path, you need to complete a quest to go past it. All these cliches are used to “gate” players to deliver a smooth, steady experience. Thankfully, The Witcher 3 does have one. Gating is a concept that can be seen across various video games, but generally, you won’t pay that much attention to it. However, developers particularly have to care about it quite a lot, as it could make or break the experience of users altogether. CD Projekt Red specially faced that struggle while creating The Witcher 3. The Witcher 3 could have a Dark Souls-like boss “gating” a main area in a parallel universe This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up What’s the deal with talking about gating? It’s not that big of a deal, but it actually is. Everybody calls The Witcher 3 a masterpiece, for its massive open world that held no bounds. However, did you ever think what it would be like if it were not like that? Maybe people would have called it “another souls-like copy” if that were the case. Recently, CDPR discussed The Witcher 3 on This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up . On the podcast, Adam Badowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt Red, shared his side of the story during the development of their hit game that changed the industry. There are a lot of ideas CDPR wanted to try out with The Witcher 3 when the development initially began. Some could have changed how the game looks and feels now completely. Did you know ****** was about to be replaced, too? That’s wild. In the same way, gating could have changed the title, and Badowski felt the same way. Do we want to have gating? There is a monster. The monster has this ultimate level 100 or something. You cannot go further without defeating this monster. It was a bad idea for our game. It works for all FromSoftware games, it’s natural, it’s one of the pillars of those wonderful games. But in The Witcher, it doesn’t work. So you have to plan it differently. Adam Badowski Adam Badowski might just be right by leaving the “gating” idea out of the beloved franchise. Otherwise, it could have been a gate that limits players, instead of delivering an experience that many still praise. Moreover, development studios don’t always have to follow the footsteps of others, and the result speaks. Why is gating used in video games? The Witcher 3 is one of the most addictive RPGs known in modern gaming. However, if used the idea of gating like other traditional RPGs, it would have worked out in CDPR’s favor. Is gating a bad thing in video games, then? It depends, as the implementation of gating is contingent on game design and the pace of progress. To deliver a linear-like experience with open-world games, gating is a fantastic choice. For instance, in Elden Ring, a huge portion of the game is locked behind a boss. Once you defeat that, the entire world shifts, which makes players realise their actions have consequences. Sometimes, gating can be used as a way to lock people out of quests that they aren’t ready for. Allowing them to seek another path, so that they don’t have difficulty finishing the quest. Maybe an item is required during the quest, which you’ll need, so gating is done. Do you like the idea of gating in video games, or do you think it’s better without them?
