Munich Jewish community head defends Israel against rising criticism

The president of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, Charlotte Knobloch, does not share the growing criticism of Israel’s lack of aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip.

“Once the hostages are free, we can talk about everything,” the Holocaust survivor told dpa in Munich, in reference to the need for aid convoys in Gaza.

Her top concern is the fate of the Israeli hostages – “but this issue, which has caused the current situation, is unfortunately hardly on the agenda anymore in this country,” she said.

Knobloch is a well-known Jewish leader in Germany, who has served as the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany and led the Munich and Upper Bavaria communities for 40 years.

Chancellor expressed doubts about Israel’s actions

Knobloch stated that she does not share the doubts recently voiced by conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz about Israel’s actions.

“It is the terrorists who caused this unspeakable suffering and continue to prolong it to this day,” she said.

Merz had previously stated that even in the fight against ************ Islamist ****** terrorism, Israel’s treatment of the ************ civilian population “increasingly in recent days” could not be justified.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul went further, announcing potential consequences. He told the Munich-based Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper that he would review and possibly restrict ******* arms deliveries due to Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Israel has come under rising worldwide criticism for what some governments and many human rights organizations say is a deliberate effort to use starvation as a tool of war.

Knobloch defends Israel

“The ****** terror attack of October 7, 2023, which left 1,200 dead and hundreds abducted, marked the worst pogrom since the end of the Holocaust,” she said.

“We must never forget: Without this assault, the current war would not exist. No one in Gaza would have to be worse off today than they were on October 6, 2023,” she said.

“For ******, however, not only were Israeli lives worthless in this war, but they also deliberately put their own population in Gaza in mortal danger from the very beginning and cynically staged their suffering.”

She stressed that Israel’s harsh response to this barbaric attack was both right and necessary, if only to free its kidnapped citizens.Knobloch places responsibility for suffering squarely on HamasUltimately, she said, the attack on Israel is also the reason for the plight of the people in Gaza.

Knobloch also pointed out that ****** terrorists are still holding dozens of Israelis under horrific conditions in Gaza. “Even the return of the remains of murdered hostages has repeatedly been staged in disgraceful spectacles that reveal the depths of inhumanity,” she said.

No one can expect Israel to forget its pain

Knobloch dismissed calls and demands for an end to Israel’s interventions. “Neither politically nor morally can Israelis be expected to simply forget this pain. Israel cannot remain idle in the face of a murderous threat like ******,” she said. This “simple fact” must remain the foundation of international solidarity with Israel, especially in Germany.

“Such clarity must be demanded,” she added.

As for how this war might end, Knobloch said, “I cannot say any better than many others. But politics is not everything here.”She stressed that it must “simply not be a matter of indifference when Jewish people in the Jewish state are threatened with death simply because they are Jews.”

The people of Israel, she said, long for nothing more than peace. “But without freedom for all remaining hostages and without genuine security for the population in Israel, peace would not be peace.”
