Injuries reported in shooting outside Meridian Mall

LANSING — Police were investigating a shooting resulting in injuries outside the Meridian Mall on May 30, and they were asking the public for information about the incident.

Meridian Township Police Chief Rick Grillo said multiple shots were fired in the parking lot on the *****’s Sporting Goods side of the mall and that people were injured, although he did not know how many or how serious their injuries were.

“The people involved were gone by the time we got here,” he said, noting that some apparently were being treated for injuries in connection with the shooting at medical facilities.

The incident was reported about 1:25 p.m., he said. There was no remaining threat to the public, and the mall remained open, Grillo said. A small section of the parking lot was blocked off for the police investigation, he said.

shortly before 2 p.m. on Friday, May 30, asking people to avoid the *****’s Sporting Goods entrance to the mall.

They added in an update that “It is not believed that there is a continued threat to public.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the police department at (517) 853-4800. They can also contact Detective Sgt. Brian Canen at *****@*****.tld or submit an anonymous tip through the Department’s social media sites.

The mall incident comes one day after police responded to Okemos High School because of “a possible armed subject.” The school was locked down for about an hour May 29, but no threat was found. An investigation is continuing.
