I Know Elden Ring Nightreign Will Be a Cult-Hit in 2035 Because It’s on the Same Journey as Miyazaki’s ******’s Souls

Elden Ring Nightreign is out, and whether it is going to be a “success” is currently in question, thanks to the amount of negative reviews it is gaining on Steam, giving it a mixed reviews tag.

This is a phenomenon we saw during the release of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree as well, and there stands a chance the ratings might just correct themselves over the course of time. However, if it doesn’t, we know it will end up becoming as big of a cult-hit in the upcoming years as big as ******’s Souls is.

is facing backlash for a few reasons | FromSoftware

Things are bound to go a bit south whenever a studio tries something new, and the same is happening with our beloved FromSoftware. While the franchise it follows up on might already be popular, thanks to Elden Ring Nightreign being in a completely different genre than what has come before, it doesn’t really fulfill the expectations of the players in a few key areas.

In any co-op/ multiplayer game, one of the most important mechanics is being able to communicate with the players around you. FromSoftware has completely skipped over this in their latest release, infuriating players, especially those who are queuing up randomly and have no way on either text or through voice to communicate with their group.

Furthermore, what’s more annoying for many is the difficulty balancing in the game. For duo players, there is really no way to ****** up and go onto the land of Limveld alone, as a third player will randomly match up, and with no way to communicate, it will just be chaos and no progress.

Why Elden Ring Nightreign might be bound to follow the same path as ******’s Souls

might share the same fate as ******’s Souls | FromSoftware

While getting backlash right at launch might be scary for other studios out there, it’s something FromSoftware is not particularly new to. Nearly all of their games, especially the Souls genre, have received criticism for similar reasons, i.e., being too difficult to play. However, even the worst and most primitive titles by it have now become cult classics, including the likes of Dark Souls 2 and ******’s Souls.

It always takes a bit of time for gamers to realise that making the game hard is not particularly bad. This time around, instead of just sticking to intensifying boss fights and the level design of the game, they have stripped the players of a basic mechanic. Rather than being a flaw, Nightreign poses it as a challenge to overcome and forces players to rely on instinctive teamwork.

At the end, the only major flaw, if you would even call it that, is how the game is unbelievably hard for players who decide to go Solo. While the director did state there are balancing mechanics in place to scale down the difficulty for solo players, it seems they aren’t calibrated well for now. There could be future patches that make the game easier for the players, but till then, it is time for players to revisit what it was like playing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for the first time.
