Hidetaka Miyazaki on FromSoft’s Most Hated Game That Made Elden Ring Nightreign Possible

The world of Souls games is ever-changing, yet it maintains the same core and fundamentals, thanks to Hidetaka Miyazaki solely handling nearly the entire franchise ever since its inception. The only outlier in this long list of games is Dark Souls 2, which was directed by Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura. While it might not have been a success amongst the community, it left behind many lessons to be learnt in the future.

Well, the future is here; after years, the reins of a Soul’s title have been handed over to somebody else. Released today is Elden Ring Nightreign, a co-op survival game directed by Junya Ishizaki, and also happens to be a spin-off to Hidetaka Miyazaki’s most successful title that came out back in 2022.

There’s only so much you can have of one single director. This is a statement that you will never hear me say when it comes to Hidetaka Miyazaki; however, entertaining different perspectives and ideas now and then doesn’t seem to be a bad idea. This is something that the renowned director agrees with.

In an interview with

, Miyazaki, while talking about the impact of Dark Souls 2 and how having a different director helps, stated the following, which now seems to stand true for Elden Ring Nightreign as well.

We were able to have that different impetus and have those different ideas and make those different connections that we otherwise might not have had. There’s really no way of telling how or if the series would have continued the way it did without Dark Souls 2.

Talking about the first and only trilogy FromSoftware has ever made, Dark Souls, the director reveals how, despite having mixed reactions at the time, the leadership structure left a lesson to be learnt internally. It was how having new and different directors can help formulate ideas and ‘connections’ that would have never been utilised otherwise.

Bringing forward these new ideas helps pioneer and innovate new level designs and mechanics that might just change the game forever. The renowned director states how the perfect ending to the Dark Souls trilogy possibly wouldn’t have happened without the happenings of the second installment.

Elden Ring Nightreign, in all honesty, is more of a lucky draw for FromSoftware. With the studio properly stepping into the waters of multiplayer for the first time, there is a huge chance it does not live up to the expectations of the lead devs and fans alike.

However, things seem to be golden for now. For every speckle of doubt, there is double the excitement from players. With the game finally out today, i.e., May 30th, no one seems to be waiting anymore and is jumping in to enjoy the world of Limveld, a land set in a parallel universe to the original Elden Ring.

What makes it better is how the game also provides an opening for gamers to finally step into the world of the Souls genre. Thanks to it being a multiplayer title, Nightreign is likely to resonate more with the modern audience, which will ultimately help FromSoftware gather a new audience along with the already existing loyal/ cult-like fan base that they have.
