Morrowind Modders Don’t Want Bethesda to Give It the ‘Oblivion Treatment’

The Elder Scrolls modding community is perhaps one of the most active ones out there, with The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind’s Tamriel Rebuilt project having no plans to stop. Founded in 2001, the ambitious mod adds the entire mainland of the province of Morrowind, beyond the original game’s island of Vvardenfell.

The team behind this 24-year-old mod aims to preserve the original game in a faithful manner that not only enhances the base game but also builds upon the foundations laid by it.

Recently, the team released their biggest expansion for Tamriel Rebuilt, Grasping Fortune. But with Bethesda officially remastering The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, would the team behind one of Morrowind’s longest-running modding projects like a similar treatment for the title?

Bethesda remastering The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind would “mess things up”

Bethesda’s faithful and highly successful remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion hasn’t concerned the team behind the

in the slightest about Morrowind getting the remaster treatment, and the team’s seemingly better off without it.

In an

with PC Gamer, the senior developer of the modding project, Cicero, revealed that he doesn’t want an Oblivion-style remaster for Morrowind, as modernising it would spoil the original game’s charm.

I’m always happy to hear when Todd [Howard] says he doesn’t want a Morrowind Remaster, because that would just mess things up… Modernising Morrowind would just ruin the game entirely.

When you realise how long the modding project has been running for, the disinterest in an official remaster seems entirely reasonable and justified. Cicero further explained that Bethesda’s official remastering of Oblivion didn’t make the team worried about a potential remaster of Morrowind.

The thing is [Oblivion] is easier to remaster than Morrowind, so I don’t think we’re worried about it. In fact, Oblivion Remastered helped TR, because [Grasping Fortune] released a week after Oblivion Remastered released, and we kind of got sucked into that wave of Elder Scrolls news.

Cicero also thinks that Tamriel Rebuilt “will be done in 2035,” so the project still has a long way to go. Bethesda would be smart to let the team do their job unless Todd Howard decides otherwise, which would kind of invalidate everything the team’s been doing for the last two decades.

It’s worth noting that Bethesda doesn’t hate its modding community at all, and the company even invited the Skyblivion modding team to their headquarters for a tour, despite officially remastering Oblivion.

Maybe Todd should show a similar level of appreciation to the Tamriel Rebuilt team and respect their wishes, while Bethesda focuses on remastering something else, like a Fallout title, perhaps, instead of another Elder Scrolls.

Should The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind get a remaster from Bethesda?

With the success of Oblivion Remastered, it’s hard not to think about how their other games would look if they received the same treatment, including Morrowind. But should it happen? The team behind Tamriel Rebuilt is doing all the heavy lifting already, so an official remaster would be somewhat redundant.

Sure, the game would look prettier with the upgraded graphics and all of modern gaming’s technological advancements, but what Tamriel Rebuilt is doing is certainly more than just putting on a fresh coat of paint. It’s completing Morrowind in more ways than one.

So, Bethesda should steer clear away from Morrowind’s clunkiness and focus on the upcoming The Elder Scrolls 6. If they do end up remastering another one of their titles, hopefully it’s one that barely has an active modding community and also something that passionate fans would appreciate.

So, what do you think about the team behind the Tamriel Rebuilt project not wanting an official remaster of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind? Are they justified, or should Bethesda remaster it anyway? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
