Heartofahlia and Quinton both win first metropolitan races, taking opening two races at slushy Gloucester Park

Returning mare Heartofahlia showed her best form in sloppy conditions at Gloucester Park on Friday night, taking the $21,000 Bridge Bar Open This Sunday Pace (2130m) to commence the meeting but not without some concern for punters.

The $2.60 TABtouch second favourite behind Shes A Tiny Dancer ($2.35) was headed and almost crossed by Drive Line ($11) in the opening 50m, with reinsman Aiden De Campo driving desperately to hold the inside advantage.

Once in front, Heartofahlia controlled the tempo before a move came from Shes A Tiny Dancer at the 1400m mark, surging up three wide.

However, Drive Line kicked up underneath Shes A Tiny Dancer and sent the market principal back to the tail of the field 1000m from home, extinguishing the favourite’s hopes.

Heartofahlia now had the race by the scruff of the neck but dropped the bit 500m from the judge and again required urgency from De Campo.

But the Art Major mare kicked on strongly, holding off Drive Line to win by a half neck.

Thirty minutes later, Quinton ($5.50) was a top performance to run down Sugar Street ($2.75f) late in the $25,000 Trotsynd – Group 1 Winners Pace (1730m), taking his second win from his last two.

After challenging Sugar Street for the early lead, Quinton found cover behind Lord Titanium ($7.50) – who sat outsider the leader – mid-race before pulling three wide 400m out.

The gelding cut down the front-runner in the final 50m, scoring by a head on the line.

It was both Quinton and Heartofahlia’s first metropolitan win, taking the four-year-olds’ earnings to $56,000 and $72,000 respectively.
