Another bridge over I-90 will be demolished. And, yes, it was struck by a large vehicle

The Beckman Road bridge over Interstate 90 in Girard Township will be demolished.

Several of the bridge beams were significantly damaged when the bridge was hit by a large vehicle in February.

The bridge has been closed since the collision and will be replaced, but not immediately. A new bridge will be built when reconstruction of the interstate resumes in 2028.

Domino effect

The Beckman Road bridge will be the fifth bridge over I-90 in western Erie County to be damaged by an oversized vehicle and then demolished.

The Platz Road bridge in Fairview Township was removed in 2011. The Pond Road bridge in Springfield Township was demolished in 2018. Neither bridge was replaced.

The Route 215 bridge in Springfield was demolished and replaced in 2021. The Route 18 bridge in Girard Township was demolished in fall 2021 and replaced in 2022.

Two more west Erie County bridges over the interstate were hit by large vehicles, repaired and later replaced, at Route 98 in Fairview and Huntley Road in Springfield.

The bridges were built with the interstate in 1959 and were about 14 feet over the highway. The clearance for modern bridges is 16½ feet to accommodate larger vehicles.

The Beckman Road bridge plan

The superstructure, or upper portion, of the bridge and its pier support are expected to be removed this year. No date for the work has been announced.

Lanes on the interstate will be closed at times between the Girard and Fairview interchanges when the bridge is removed. Rolling traffic stops will also be needed to accommodate the work.

The detour for Beckman Road traffic will remain in place until a new bridge is built. Traffic has been routed onto Tannery, Sterrettania, Keefer and Franklin roads.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation had planned to demolish and replace the bridge in 2028.

It was used by about 125 vehicles daily.
