I’m Amazed an 18-Year-Old Valve Game Still Has More Players Than Destiny 2 Right Now

Valve hasn’t launched a new title in forever, and Deadlock is still in early access, but their silence hasn’t stopped players from revisiting their older gems and having fun. What if I told you that a two-decade-old title from them is currently dominating Steam Charts over the likes of Destiny 2?

You may be looking at me like I’m the G-Man, and frankly, I don’t blame you, but this just goes to show that Valve has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to making games that stand the test of time. I expected nothing less from the mastermind, Gabe Newell.

More players are playing Team Fortress 2 than Destiny 2 right now

According to

, over 42,000 players are playing Team Fortress 2, while Destiny 2 has just over 16,000 concurrent players at the time of writing. Of course, these numbers will update every second, but it’s still mind-blowing to see a 2007 game consistently charting Steam’s top 20 while Destiny 2, a comparatively recent game, is falling behind.

While Valve’s guarded kitchens refuse to present a new dish, players are still delving into their leftovers. Although Team Fortress 2’s rumored transition to the Source 2 Engine could be an answer to why players are suddenly swarming the title. But it’s probably loyalty having a hand in it.

All of Valve’s titles, be it Counter-Strike or Half-Life have always had a loyal following, and the case isn’t different for Team Fortress 2 as players are not only playing it 18 years after release, but the community is also creating new game modes for the title through Steam Workshop to keep the experience fresh.

This commitment to preserve the game in more ways than one from the community is nothing short of heartwarming, and this continued support from fans should at least be noticed by Valve itself. I’m not saying they should start making Team Fortress 3, but a little acknowledgement goes a long way.

If the whispers of Team Fortress 2 porting to Source 2 have any credibility, not only would it solve all the game’s persistent issues, but it would also mean Valve heading back to its prime 2000s era again. And you know what that means.

Half-Life could be making its grand return soon

I believe in miracles, but if you told me a few years back that a third Half-Life game, that’s not a VR title, is in development, I would’ve laughed in your face. But no one’s laughing now, as dataminers and leakers suggest that a playable build of Half-Life 3 exists and the game could release as soon as this year.

Imagine getting Half-Life 3 before Grand Theft Auto 6. What was previously accepted as a meme may soon become a reality as a project codenamed ‘HLX’ is seemingly in the works at Valve. But wait, there’s more, and Team Fortress fans, this one’s for you.

According to dataminers like Tyler McVicker, Valve is also developing something codenamed “Tf“, which could be a new Team Fortress title. Now it could very well be just a string of codes, but who’s to say Valve isn’t at least considering a return to the world of Team Fortress?

Look at the active player count, the loyal community, and the passion from fans to keep Team Fortress 2 alive. Valve would be dumb not to capitalise on this resurgence. If the stars align and we somehow get new Half-Life and Team Fortress titles, who knows? Maybe we’ll see an Orange Box sequel too in our lifetime.

So, what do you think about Team Fortress 2 having more players than Destiny 2 on Steam? Should Valve revive the franchise, or should they focus on their upcoming multiplayer title, Deadlock? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
