Royals’ affiliate buys Overland Park Aspiria campus’ mortgage

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals have confirmed with FOX4 that a business affiliated with the team has bought the mortgage of a possible stadium site in Johnson County, Kansas — the old Sprint Campus near 119th and Nall, now known as Aspiria.

“The Kansas City Royals continue to explore all options throughout our community to develop a new stadium for the team,” part of a team statement said that FOX4 obtained late Wednesday afternoon. “We have not yet decided on a site, and any assertion to the contrary is inaccurate.”

“As part of our ongoing efforts, we have negotiated with or made investments in multiple potential sites – both in Missouri and in Kansas,” the statement goes on to say. “One of these investments was the acquisition (by an affiliate of the Royals) of the mortgage on the Aspiria campus through an arms-length ***** process.”

Earlier Wednesday, FOX4 talked to three elected leaders on the Missouri side about the upcoming Special Session that Missouri lawmakers will have. One of the main priorities of the special session will be Republican Governor Mike Kehoe’s stadium package that tries to keep both teams in the Show-Me State.

Wednesday, Democratic Jackson County Executive Frank White said it was his goal to still keep the Royals and Chiefs in his county. He supported the ‘Vote No’ side of the April 2024 sales tax election for both teams though.

White said he could not speak for the state when it comes to something like the special session.

“For the county, you know what we’ve done for the teams over all these years,” he said. “Our plan is still to get a deal that makes sense for both Jackson County and both teams, and we hope to keep both teams in Jackson County.”

One person who did not support the stadium package during the final week of the legislative session was Republican State Senator Joe Nicola from Grain Valley. Nicola told FOX4 he thinks the teams are important to the county though.

“But more importantly, it’s our property taxes, and that’s what I’m fighting for,” Nicola said Wednesday. “We need to have some property tax relief.”

Nicola says he wants that relief before he’d support the stadium bill. Property tax relief was not a part of Kehoe’s Tuesday morning news conference though when it comes to what will be discussed during the special session.

“But he and I have had discussions,” Nicola said of his conversations with Governor Kehoe. “I’ve discussed it with leadership with the Speaker of the House, and my property tax bill is supposed to be part of the Special Session, so that’s what I’m pushing for and fighting for, and I think we have the consensus in the Senate to get something passed.”

Nicola’s bill would give the State Tax Commission authority to withhold up to 50% of all taxes that Jackson County is due if they’re ordered to lower assessments.

Missouri Republican Congressman Mark Alford said that a domed stadium would be great for the Chiefs to try to get a Super Bowl.

“But I also understand my constituents out in Eastern Jackson County who don’t want to pay for a stadium to subsidize it,” he said to FOX4. “I think part of the equation though, a large part is the tax revenue that’s brought into this region from these two teams.”

The special session starts Monday at 12 p.m. in Jefferson City.
