CD Projekt Red’s Major Update on Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 is well-known for its disappointing launch, but with updates and fixes, the studio has managed to completely transform the game into one of the best open-world video games of all time. The release of the Phantom Liberty DLC in 2023 further boosted the game’s popularity, but now it’s time for the studio to move on to the next chapter.

CD Projekt Red first announced Project Orion (the next Cyberpunk game) in 2022 via a post on X. By February 2024, it was confirmed that Project Orion was in early development. CD Projekt has now announced that Project Orion has moved past the conceptual phase and entered the pre-production phase. Not much is known about the game, but the creator of Cyberpunk gave fans a hint earlier this month.

, CD Projekt Red confirmed that “Cyberpunk 2,” also known as Project Orion, has progressed to pre-production. The statement said,

Several weeks ago the CD PROJEKT RED team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase. As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the codename Project Orion – has progressed to preproduction.

This is a major announcement, as it appears that CD Projekt is eager to deliver the next chapter of the Cyberpunk series to players as soon as possible. The statement also revealed that the total sales of Phantom Liberty, Cyberpunk 2077‘s DLC, have surpassed 10 million copies.

In the past, CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski has explained that the journey from “pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average.” This means that the sequel could be released in 2030 or 2031. The studio is also working on the next chapter of the Witcher franchise, so as of now, it is hard to tell at what pace the developers are moving and which franchise they will prioritise.

CD Projekt Red hasn’t revealed anything about the setting of the next Cyberpunk game. However, the creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop game series, Mike Pondsmith, revealed some interesting information about the game. Pondsmith was closely involved in the development process of the first game.

, Pondsmith admitted that he wasn’t as involved in Project Orion as he was in the first game, but he does know a few things.

I spent a lot of time talking to one of the environment guys, and he was explaining how the new place in Orion, because there’s another city we visit – I’m not telling you any more than that but there’s another city we visit. And Night City is still there. But I remember looking at it and going, yeah I understand the feel you’re going for this, and this really does work. And it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong. I said, ‘Yeah, I can see this working.’

The open world of Cyberpunk 2 could be a dystopian version of Chicago in the future, but nothing is confirmed as of now. As for Cyberpunk 2077, the game is all set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 next month.
