Gamers would agree that Halo is one of the most influential gaming franchises of all time. Ever since Combat Evolved was released in 2001, the series has fundamentally changed how first-person shooters operate. However, it’s fair to say that in recent years, Halo has lost its charm.

343 Industries’ takeover of the Halo franchise didn’t exactly produce the results everyone had hoped for. From design mistakes to missed opportunities, the studio couldn’t capture the essence of the Halo franchise. What’s even more shocking is that it produced the franchise’s most hated game, which had a budget comparable to that of Red Dead Redemption 2.

However, the same can’t be said for 343 Industries and Halo 5: Guardians. Right upon its release, Guardians received a lot of backlash as it lacked basic core features of the franchise, such as split-screen. The game’s campaign was short and took some weird turns that ruined popular characters such as Cortana. What’s worse is that players are forced to play the title as Spartan Locke, not Master Chief.

How much did this disaster cost 343 Industries to develop? It has been reported that the budget for this game was anywhere between $160 million and $200 million. If it had almost the same budget as Red Dead Redemption 2, why did Guardians fail to deliver?

Well, it’s probably due to 343 Industries wasting the entirety of that budget on making promotional material that wasn’t even connected to the narrative, such as the “Hunt The Truth” trailers. 343 Industries simply failed to focus on the main gameplay and instead delivered a title that ruined the franchise and its player base.
