Borderlands Review Bombing Continues Despite Pitchford’s Apology

Gearbox Software’s highly anticipated Borderlands 4 has yet to hit store shelves, but it’s already knee deep in controversy. Last week, ****** Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, picked a fight against the entire gaming community by saying that “real fans” would buy the game regardless of a $80 price tag.

This seems to have triggered a whole chain of reactions because the entire Borderlands trilogy has gotten review-bombed on Steam. But not just because of his words. Publisher Take-Two apparently made changes to the End User License Agreement for the games that didn’t sit well with fans. What is the next move for Take-Two and Gearbox?

Borderlands 4 has started a whole mess for the franchise

It all began last week when we saw Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, respond to a fan expressing concern about a potential $80 price tag for Borderlands 4. Pitchford defended the potential price tag by saying, “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.” He continued to recall his own experience of buying Starflight for $80 back in 1991.

Boy howdy, JackGPT, is that how I sound? My bad, but cheers to Duke_Newcombe and

In seriousness though, nobody likes being taken for granted and it was not my intent. I’m humbled by the love and support everyone has shown…

Intended or not, the comment was perceived by many as elitist, out of touch, and dismissive of current economic pressures. And as you’d expect, gamers across online communities had nothing but criticism for Pitchford. A lot of it was about the perceived insensitivity of telling fans to “just pay up” during a time of rising living costs.

Publishers like Devolver Digital even jumped into the trend of making fun of it. Using the controversy to market Mycopunk, its upcoming co-op shooter, the studio joked that four copies of their game could be purchased for the price of one Borderlands 4. In the days that followed, Pitchford tried to steer the community back in his favor, but as usual, the damage was already done.

People are review-bombing the Borderlands games because Gearbox/2K made EULA changes

Looks like people are review bombing the entire **Borderlands** series because Gearbox/2K made EULA changes that can apparently gain root-level access to your machine under the guise of…

But while that may be one of the reasons behind the review bombing, it’s not the main one. We all know that gamers have taken review bombing as the default method of protesting changes to games or any kind of frustration in general. And that is exactly what happened because the review bombing was due to changes in the End User License Agreement for the franchise’s games.

So, how much will Borderlands 4 really be?

As for Pitchford, he ended up making a half-apology for his statements in response to a viral AI parody of his original statement. “In seriousness though, nobody likes being taken for granted and it was not my intent,” he wrote. “I’m humbled by the love and support everyone has shown the team… Regardless of where the price lands, it’s going to be worth it and then some.

As of today, neither Gearbox nor publisher 2K Games has confirmed the final price of Borderlands 4. But we already know that the game is coming out in a few months, so pre-orders are expected to open soon.

Funnily enough, 2K just recently priced the upcoming ******: The Old Country at $50. So the publisher is fully aware of pricing tactics in the market right now. Let’s see if that makes any difference.

Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
