Major Supermarket Chain’s Drivers Vote to Authorize Strike

Kroger drivers could soon be striking.

Teamsters at Kroger’s Forest Park, Georgia, fulfillment center voted in favor to authorize a strike on Tuesday, after they say the company has “repeated refusal to negotiate a fair agreement.”

According to a May 27 press release, the workers–who are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 528–are “demanding a first Teamsters contract with strong wages, good benefits, and enforceable workplace protections.”

The vote to authorize a strike follows the 30 CDL drivers who voted by a 96 percent margin to join the Teamsters last year, and in the months since, have accused Kroger of “slow-walking negotiations” and failing “to offer a contract that meets basic standards.”

“Kroger needs to stop dragging its feet and deliver a real offer that respects the work we do,” said Marion Jackson, a Kroger driver and Local 528 shop steward, in a statement. “This company can more than afford what we’re asking for. We are ready to strike if Kroger doesn’t start taking our demands seriously.”

“These workers organized with the Teamsters to win better wages, real benefits, and respect on the job,” Tom Erickson, director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, added. “If Kroger refuses to deliver, we’ll do whatever it takes to hold them accountable. We will never allow any company to shortchange our members.”

The drivers are also receiving strong support from local community groups, including the Concerned ****** Clergy of Metropolitan Atlanta, with president of the organization Rev. Shanan E. Jones calling the situation “shameful.”

“The men and women who drive and deliver Kroger’s products are the same ones driving Kroger’s profits,” Jones said in a statement. “They deserve dignity, respect, and their fair share.”

A rep for Kroger did not immediately respond to Parade’s request for comment.
