Nuclear energy was among the four key policies the National Party would not budge in post-election negotiations with the Liberals. Mr Littleproud on Tuesday would not confirm if any changes had been made to the policies but said his party needed “to be pragmatic” on nuclear. As we’ve said from the very start, since the election was over, that we should have a technology agnostic approach but should still look around removing that moratorium and where we can incentivise to get nuclear as part of the grid,” Mr Littleproud told Sky News. “So we’ve been pragmatic, but we’ve been very clear about those four policies, and we’ve got a set of words back that I’ll present to our party room.” He added that “there was no need to have further negotiations”. The other three key policies included divestiture powers for supermarkets, a $20bn regional fund and greater telecommunications coverage for country Australia. The Nationals’ refusal to compromise clashed with Ms Ley’s vision of a “nothing adopted and nothing abandoned” approach to reviewing policies in the wake of the Coalition’s decimation at the federal election.
