Wisconsin fire causes major damage to apartment building and boutique; fundraiser launched to aid recovery

MENOMONIE, Wis. (WFRV) – A large fire that broke out Tuesday night in Wisconsin required an extensive response and has left residents and business owners facing a costly recovery.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 700 block of 3rd Street after reports of smoke coming from a building associated with apartments above 244 Main Street.

When crews arrived, they found smoke seeping through cracks in the bricks and along the building’s foundation.

Firefighters entered with a hose line and encountered dense smoke, zero visibility, and extreme heat in the basement.

A thermal imaging camera revealed a deep-seated fire that had likely been burning for an extended *******.

Conditions quickly worsened, forcing firefighters to evacuate the basement and leave their hose line behind.

With all occupants safely out, crews shifted to a defensive strategy. Fires in this type of structure present added challenges, including the risk of flames spreading through shared walls to neighboring buildings.

Mutual aid was requested from nearby departments, and heavy equipment from CR Bryan & Sons was brought in.

Firefighters worked through the night, pouring hundreds of thousands of gallons of water into the building. An excavator was used to gain access and help contain the fire to 244 Main Street.

Despite the efforts, smoke and water traveled through a common wall, causing significant damage to the adjacent Mood Boutique.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to monitor and extinguish hot spots. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to be electrical.

The American Red Cross provided assistance to those affected and supported fire crews with food and water during the operation.
