NetEase Games hasn’t been shy with the updates to Marvel Rivals. We’ve gotten multiple different metas since the game came out, and with Ultron joining the game soon, we have new changes for the midseason 2.5 update. The game has been going through a dive meta recently, with duelists terrorizing supports in the backline.

While dozens of heroes are receiving tweaks, the spotlight is firmly on three Duelists: Psylocke, Human Torch, and Iron Fist. It’s great to see that NetEase is willing to make these changes. The developers have often prioritized fun over meta, and by fixing the meta, we might go back to having fun again.

Marvel Rivals is getting a huge mid-season update

For once, the Marvel Rivals community seems unified. While the nerfs to Groot and Captain America were also met with applause, it’s the tuning down of these three Duelists that’s being seen as the most impactful for improving game balance. As Redditor u/Trayth commented, “Very happy to see Cap, Groot, Psylocke, Johnny and Iron Fist nuked” So let’s look at the nerfs.

Although she was rarely banned in lower-tier matches, high-ranking players knew just how dangerous Psylocke could be in the right hands. Her blend of burst damage, stealth, and versatility made her a nightmare for supports, especially during the dive meta we have going on right now.

The patch reduces the damage of her Wing Shurikens from 14 to 12 per hit and cuts the Psychic Stealth invisibility duration from 3 seconds to 2. There are small changes at first glance, but it helps with her burst potential and evasiveness, two of her most important qualities.

Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch, was a consistent problem across all levels of play. His kit can quickly melt enemies, all while he stays slippery. He often “ran the lobby,” as one Redditor complained. In Season 2.5, Torch’s offensive and defensive abilities will take a hit.

-Adjust base health from 600 to 575.
-Increase the delay of shield recovery from 2s to 4s after unleashing Living Legend.
-Increase the energy cost of Freedom Charge (Ultimate Ability) from 2800 to 3100.

His Fire Cluster damage has been reduced from 7 to 6 per hit, the charge speed of Blazing Blast is also being increased from 2 to 3 seconds. Additionally, the shield from Flaming Meteor has been nerfed from 75 to 50, with the cooldown extended from 15 to 20 seconds.

Lin Lie, better known as Iron Fist, also took a hit in Season 2.5, much to the relief of many of us in the higher ranks. His tankiness and mobility made him one of the most slippery duelists to deal with. Once again, this is during the dive meta, so he really was a menace for us support mains.

The Dragon’s Defense ability now converts less blocked damage into bonus health (1.3 instead of 1.5), and the maximum conversion cap has been reduced from 200 to 175. His Jeet Kune Do cooldown reduction was cut significantly—from 1.5 seconds to 1 second

The feedback on these nerfs has been overwhelmingly positive. On top of these changes, we’re also getting Ultron, the newest hero addition to the roster following Emma Frost. There will also be a new map, new team-up abilities, and quality-of-life features. For now, the meta looks a little healthier.
