What Is FSR Redstone? Secret AMD Tech May Dethrone DLSS

AMD unleashed a flurry of announcements at its Computex Keynote of 2025, revealing a ton of exciting new tech and hardware. In addition to its various improvements in AI, machine learning, and the upcoming RX 9060 XT, improvements to FSR upscaling were also announced.

Another interesting point of discussion was FSR ‘Redstone’, a next-generation upscaler that aimed to bridge the gap between FSR 4 and DLSS even further. It’s quite an exciting release, and could very well dethrone DLSS in the future.

It would appear that AMD is not done with FSR. Speaking out at Computex 2025, the tech giant unveiled its plans for FSR 4, as well as a next-generation version of the same, dubbed FSR: Redstone.

It should be noticed here that FSR 4 has already been known to be quite an effective upscaling solution, which has been proven to be able to go toe to toe with Nvidia’s own DLSS. However, DLSS still manages to edge out by a small margin, offering sizable gains in performance with fewer degradations in image quality.

FSR 4 was already a massive step up over FSR 3.1, but AMD seems to be aiming to refine the formula even further with Redstone. While we really do not have a ton of information on hand currently, we do know that Redstone is based on these 3 major keystones:

• Neural Radiance Caching
• Machine Learning Ray Regeneration
• Machine Learning Frame Generation

As is quite obvious from the list above, FSR Redstone makes heavy use of machine learning algorithms to approximate image calculations, and sort of fill in the gaps for missing pixels. In particular, it seems to go neck to neck with Nvidia.

Nvidia’s DLSS 4 also makes heavy use of machine learning assisted approximation techniques, and AMD’s FSR Redstone is no different in this regard. Redstone is built with modern games in mind, which feature a lot of ray-traced reflections and shadows.

Using all 3 mentioned keystones, AMD is able to reconstruct rays, and generate additional frames, which boost FPS dramatically. While frame generation wasn’t exactly a new concept for AMD, having access to ray reconstruction should tip the scales in its favor.

It should also be noted here that FSR Redstone’s frame generation is AI-assisted, meaning that it will likely have a similar equivalent to Nvidia’s MFF (multi-frame generation).

FSR Redstone vs DLSS: Which is better?

At this point, it is quite hard to say which is better. We barely have any concrete information surrounding Redstone, so it is too early to make a final call.

However, given how close AMD’s FSR 4 managed to get to DLSS, Redstone should bring quite a massive uplift in both performance and image quality – something which AMD has historically struggled with.

Another thing to keep in mind here is that AMD’s FSR 4 and Redstone are very likely going to be locked down to RDNA 4 GPUs, such as the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070 XT. This is largely thanks to the fact that these upscalers use machine learning, which must be hardware-accelerated.

As such, backporting the technology to RDNA 3 and older GPUs seems like a distant dream for now. Even if they do work, the performance would be quite terrible.
