Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie’s 4K Blu-ray remaster was produced by Discotek Media and launched in 2023 with a $35 list price. Despite being over 30 years old at this point, Street Fighter II’s animation still looks great, and the 4K enhancements are superb. In addition to the visual improvements offered by 2160p resolution and HDR10, the release has a wide assortment of audio options and enhancements, including DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, the PG-13 North American audio, unrated *** audio, and original Japanese audio with subtitles.

You’ll also get an assortment of special features on the disc, including production art and liner notes.

The live-action adaptation of Street Fighter II released in US theaters in December 1994, just a few months after the animated movie’s debut. While once again a box office hit–it earned roughly three times its budget–the Jean-Claude Van Damme-led movie received rather terrible reviews. Even today, it holds a 20% user rating average on Rotten Tomatoes and 11% on the Tomatometer.

Van Damme starred opposite Raul Julia in the actor’s final role, and Julia’s performance as General M. Bison was arguably the best aspect of what is otherwise a movie with underwhelming action sequences, cringey dialogue, and bizarre story beats.

That said, it’s still interesting to watch the live-action adaptation alongside the superior animated film as a double feature. And if you’re a Street Fighter fan who wants a cool collectible, Street Fighter: The Movie’s Steelbook Edition Blu-ray is available at

Following the commercial success of both films, Street Fighter set its sights on television screens the following year. Street Fighter: The Animated Series, unfortunately, didn’t reach the same heights as the animated movie. That’s a generous description, as both of the show’s two seasons were quite bad.

Still, given the superb quality of Discotek’s Street Fighter II physical release, the upcoming launch of Street Fighter: The Animated Series on Blu-ray is noteworthy. You can preorder Street Fighter: The Animated Series on Blu-ray for $40 ahead of its May 27 release.

It should be emphasized that this is a standard definition Blu-ray release, not a complete restoration/remaster. That means all 26 episodes are displayed in their original 4:3 aspect ratio.

One cool feature with the Blu-ray release is the optional audio commentaries you can listen to while watching each episode. Each commentary track is narrated by a Youtuber who specializes in fighting games. Here’s the full list of special features.
