City of South Perth councillor Mary Choy resigns effective immediately for ‘personal reasons’

Mary Choy has resigned from the City of South Perth council, effective immediately.

She said her resignation was due to “personal reasons.”

Ms Choy was first elected as a Mill Point ward representative in 2019 and unsuccessfully ran for mayor against Greg Milner in the 2023 elections.

Mr Milner said Ms Choy had contributed years of dedicated service to the community.

“Ms Choy has contributed to the city in numerous ways beyond her role as councillor, including serving on the audit, risk and governance committee, the CEO evaluation committee, and as a delegate to the community safety and crime prevention group,” he said.

PerthNow reached out to Ms Choy for further comment but did not receive a response.

The vacant position will not require an extraordinary election; instead, the position will be filled in the upcoming October elections.

Cr Nic Coveney is currently the only councillor to represent the Mill Point ward.

Ms Choy was one of five councillors that a special electors meeting in 2022 voted confidence in had been “undermined” during debate over a proposed recreation and aquatic facility.

During the saga, she proposed the city accept petitions only if they are “respectful, decorous and temperate.”

The council eventually resolved to not progress with the facility due to a “significant capital funding shortfall.”
