But the reason why players are returning is that the enemies are invading the home planet of the Helldivers. So if that’s what it takes to bring back players, then why should it not work for Space Marine 2? Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has continued to have a steady player base since its release, but it has far more modest player engagement. The difference isn’t enough to panic or anything, but just imagine if it got an update like Helldivers 2. What if we had to defend Terra from a Tyranid invasion, or from the forces of Chaos? Space Marine 2 needs to copy the newest Helldivers 2 update Helldivers 2’s Heart of Democracy update worked not just because it introduced new enemies or gameplay mechanics—it worked because it raised the stakes. The very idea that Super Earth was under attack created urgency and unity among players. Suddenly, our objective isn’t to go spread democracy on alien planets anymore. Today, we need to defend our home. The Illuminate have reached the Heart of Democracy. Our Mega Cities are under siege. Liberty now hangs in the balance. The Ministry of Defence has authorised arsenal upgrades and placed SEAF soldiers on active duty. Today, we fight for the future of Super Earth! An update that places players on the sacred grounds of Holy Terra to defend the Emperor’s home itself would go incredibly hard. There’s no doubt that an update like that would bring in the same kind of flood of returning players. Space Marine 2 has steadily become a pretty solid live service title. Saber Interactive has been updating the game and adding new content since the game came out. We’ve gotten features like Prestige Ranks, new operations, and improved matchmaking, among so much more. The recent Trygon update was even complete with a new Tyranid boss. Space Marine 2 is fantastic. A brilliant co-op experience and the best Warhammer game I have ever played! The combat and visuals are spectacular, while the world, story, and attention to detail have also made my 40k nerd heart sing It has quickly shot up my GOTY list. The update in April pushed it to around 20,000, but that was about it. In comparison, the new Helldivers 2’s new update made so many players return that the game has reached a This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up of more than 160,000 players. It wouldn’t quite fit lore-wise, but games have the freedom to explore This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up You might argue that Warhammer 40K lore doesn’t allow for a direct assault on Holy Terra—or at least not in the current timeline. But games are meant to explore “what ifs“, and a hypothetical mission to defend Terra could be presented as a vision, a dream, or even a Chaos-fueled delusion. There are a lot of possibilities here, and while the game doesn’t need to explore any of them, they are cool to think about. Space Marine 2 is in a good place, but it could be in a great one. Just as Helldivers 2 reminded its players what was worth fighting for, Space Marine 2 should dare to do the same. Saber Interactive has handled the transition into a live service model with surprising grace. The game’s monetization has been pretty fair, and updates are frequent. And unlike other live service games that outstay their welcome, Space Marine 2 already knows where it’s going because Saber has confirmed that Space Marine 3 is in development.
