Marine Rescue Port Hedland breaks ground on game-changing emergency facility

Marine Rescue Port Hedland (MRPH) is one step closer to a new emergency services facility, with sod officially turned at the proposed site.

Commander Zac Slaughter said the new base would strengthen MRPH’s operational capabilities, providing the infrastructure needed to deliver faster, more effective marine rescue services to the Port Hedland community in the instance of natural disasters and maritime emergencies.

“This project has been a vision since I joined MRPH in 2014 and the groundbreaking is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers over the past 2½ years,” he said.

“Thanks to the unwavering support from our sponsors and stakeholders, we have secured $2.956 million towards this project, with work on the new office facility now under way.”

The new base will provide a fit-for-purpose operations centre and training facility to attract and retain members, and protect critical export infrastructure and operations at one of the world’s largest bulk export ports.

Pilbara Ports donated $200,000 to MRPH in support of the new training centre and operational base.

“This partnership is a vital step toward enhancing marine safety and ensuring safer, more efficient waterways in Port Hedland,” Pilbara Ports chief executive Samuel McSkimming said.

Other key sponsors include Department of Fire and Emergency Services, BHP, State Emergency Management Committee, Roy Hill, Mineral Resources, Pilbara Minerals and Fortescue.

While the new office construction is under way, MRPH continues to seek additional funding to complete the remaining stages, including the boat shed additions, site works, carparks, landscaping and heritage interpretation.
