Tennessee death row inmate Oscar Franklin Smith chooses last meal ahead of execution

Tennessee death row inmate Oscar Franklin Smith picked his last meal ahead of his scheduled execution, the Tennessee Department of Correction confirmed.

Smith, 75, is to die by lethal injection on May 22 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

Smith requested hotdogs, tater tots and apple pie with vanilla ice cream for his last meal, TDOC spokesperson Dorinda Carter confirmed May 19.

The meal will be delivered to him the night before the planned execution, and must be eaten by midnight, according to the new protocol. Death row inmates typically get $20 toward a special meal before they are executed.

Smith will be moved to death watch 48 hours ahead of the execution. Death watch means inmates are under strict security and control to “maintain safe and orderly operations of the prison,” according to TDOC.
