“I’m always surprised by how many people don’t” Know That Brutal ‘The Last of Us’ Twist

The Last of Us has slowly grown to become a phenomenon, amassing a large, dedicated fan base via its two games and ongoing HBO Max TV series (of the same name). The Last of Us Part II has also been quite a controversial title, and the same applies to Season 2 of The Last of Us.

Those who have played through the second game might know what was coming, but for those unfamiliar with the game, it was a shocking reveal. Indeed, it would appear that many were yet unaware of the brutal twist that took place in Episode 2, as revealed by showrunner Craig Mazin.

Craig Mazin details ‘that scene’ from Episode 2 of The Last of Us Season 2

Obviously, heavy spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2 will follow. Keep this in mind before you read any further. With that in mind, let us continue.

The episode referred to here by Craig is none other than the infamous Episode 2, which resulted in a rather brutal end for Joel. The second season begins with a rather disappointing start, where much of the first episode is wasted on filler content.

Things ramp up in the second episode, which ultimately culminates in Joel’s death at Abby’s hands while a helpless Ellie watches. Joel’s death came as a shock to many, more so for those who had never played (or watched a playthrough) of the second game.

Joel’s death was a particularly heartbreaking moment, and the prior awkward, unfinished interactions between him and Ellie made it feel even worse, given that they had not departed on the best of terms prior.

Craig was also quite surprised by the number of people who did not see that ‘twist’ coming. It was a surprise, but what shocked him even more was the number of people who were rather ‘welcoming’ to the reveal.

But no, I’m never surprised by how many people do know something. I’m always surprised by how many people don’t. It was incredible. There were so many people in my life who were texting me like, “What?! No!” That was surprising.

According to him, far fewer people had a reactionary, negative response to Joel’s death, even if they were left disappointed in the overall outcome. If anything, the scene helped cement Kaitlyn Dever’s role as the villainous Abby in the hearts of the audience.

This was also followed by multiple creative changes throughout Season 2, many of which were rather minor.

The Last of Us showrunner expects to make a fourth season

Elaborating to Collider, Craig Mazin detailed more on his goals and what viewers can expect from the ongoing season. For starters, Mazin aims to expand the scope of the ongoing series well beyond its second season.

According to Mazin, there simply is a lot more to tell, and the only way they can deliver it is by extending the show well beyond its third, greenlit season. In particular, The Last of Us is expected to have 4 seasons, with seasons 3 and 4 acting as a sort of finale to the saga.

Expect quite a few changes and great degrees of creative liberty. After all, the second season brought with it a grander scope and budget.

You can watch The Last of Us Season 2 on HBO Max. The finale, episode 7 is expected to air on May 25, 2025.
