Is It More Graphics-Heavy Than ‘Escape From Tarkov’?

Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, is scheduled for release sometime later this year. It is a first-person shooter that takes place in the canonical universe of the previously Mac-exclusive Marathon games and is shaping up to be quite the release.

Given that it is a modern AAA title, though, expect state-of-the-art visual fidelity, tweaks, and optimizations to further augment the overall experience. To this extent, Bungie has thankfully provided a list of PC system requirements in advance, but how does it compare to Escape from Tarkov, one of its direct competitors?

Marathon PC system requirements revealed

As mentioned earlier, Bungie has finally lifted the curtain off the PC system requirements for Marathon. The system requirements are surprisingly light, which actually makes total sense when you consider that Marathon is poised to be a multiplayer game, where accessibility trumps everything else.

Regardless, here is the list of its official PC system requirements:

Minimum

  • Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 6600 or an AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB) or an AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (4 GB)
  • DirectX: Version 12 with feature level 12_1 support

Bungie is yet to announce the recommended PC system requirements for Marathon. Stay tuned for more updates on this page.

Overall, Marathon’s PC system requirements seem shockingly low, which is a refreshing breath of fresh air in an industry plagued by sky-high system requirements and poorly optimized games.

Regarding storage, expect to allocate over 50 gigabytes of data on a fast, NVMe-based SSD. Do not try to run this game on a SATA hard drive.

It should also be noted here that the minimum PC system requirements listed above are part of the game’s closed alpha tests and are not necessarily indicative of finalized specifications. Expect a few more optimizations and tweaks in the final build.

Marathon vs Escape From Tarkov PC system requirements

Escape from Tarkov is yet another first-person shooter and is shaping up to be quite some stiff competition for Bungie. The former has been widely praised for its realistic combat simulations, grounded gameplay, and breathtaking visuals, while Bungie seems to be languishing in a recent controversy surrounding the plagiarism of its entire art direction.

Controversies aside, both games are built on top of very different game engines and cannot be compared in an apples-to-apples manner. Regardless, here are the minimum PC system requirements for the two games, compared:

Parameter Marathon Escape from Tarkov
Operating System Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i5 6600 or an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or an Intel Core i5-10400F
RAM 8 GB 8 GB
GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB) or an AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (4 GB) AMD RX 560 or and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050
DirectX DirectX 12 DirectX 11

As is obvious from the table above, both games are fairly comparable in terms of their overall requirements. Escape from Tarkov is, however, notable in being more demanding on the CPU, while Marathon seems to be slightly more GPU bound.

Overall, both games should perform roughly the same, assuming optimization doesn’t take a *********.

Marathon is set to release on 23rd September, 2025.
