Marvel Rivals might not be the talk of the town like it was a few months ago, but its launch was genuinely one of the biggest ones. Developer NetEase Games managed to surpass expectations and overtake competitors such as Overwatch 2. The Blizzard hero shooter fell to an absolute low in terms of player numbers.

Blizzard wasn’t going to go out like that. In the last couple of months, the studio has brought tons of major updates to Overwatch 2. With Season 16, it went all out as players got a brand-new Stadium game mode, hero, map bans, and a number of other additions. , right after the arrival of the Season 16 update for Overwatch 2, the game celebrated a peak player count of 60,127 players. That might seem low to some, but it’s the third-highest count for the hero-shooter after its release on Steam and the debut of Season 10.

However, what’s worrying is that the increase in player numbers for Overwatch 2 was quite short-lived. Within a matter of two weeks, the player count returned to the pre-Season 16 levels. Currently, the game is averaging about 25,000-29,000 players daily.

While it’s great to see that fans returned to Overwatch 2 to celebrate the arrival of Season 16’s features, it paints a worrying picture. Even with the new game mode and hero addition, Overwatch 2 is not able to maintain a consistent player base.

It’s not as if the Stadium mode is a terrible addition. The community has hailed it as one of the biggest game-changing shifts in recent years, and they can’t wait to see what the future holds. However, it’s really time for Blizzard to start thinking about how it can grow Overwatch 2.

, game director Aaron Keller opened up about the future of the hero-shooter and revealed that there are big plans in the works.

The Blizzard development team is actively listening to the player base and using that as inspiration to design more features for Overwatch 2. Although Keller stated that Perks and Stadium were a massive step up for the hero-shooter, they’re not the end of the line for Overwatch 2.

Even though Keller didn’t reveal anything specific, the next few seasons for Overwatch 2 are supposed to bring exciting updates. According to the game director, 2026 should prove to be a “bonkers” year for the game.

Let’s hope Blizzard can soon reveal what’s coming to Overwatch 2 as the hero-shooter desperately needs new additions to keep growing.
