The Last of Us series isn’t a stranger to fan backlash and controversies, and the case is no different with the show adaptation. Be it about the castings, messy plot points, or lack of subtexts, this show has faced every kind of backlash. The game, while being universally acclaimed, has faced major controversies, so it was expected that the show would share the same fate.

One of the biggest pushbacks that the show faced was its casting of Ellie, the show’s protagonist. Now, no shade to Bella Ramsey as they did an incredible job in The Last of Us Season 1, and while their acting remains admirable still, their portrayal of an older Ellie in the second season leaves much to be desired.

breaking down Ellie and Dina’s fight with a flock of stalkers in season 2. At that specific angle, Cassandra looks a bit too much like Ellie from the second game. Don’t get us wrong, Bella has proved themselves to be a fantastic actor and they play the role of Ellie very well, especially in the first season.

It’s just that they don’t suit a grown-up Ellie. There’s no fault in their performance, though, as they channel Ellie in a lot of ways, from mannerisms to the way Ellie talks in the game. But for a grown-up Ellie, they’re missing that unhinged and bloodthirsty vibe that Ashley Johnson brought to the character in the second game, making her genuinely scary.

Would a more accurate casting have solved all the problems with season 2? No, because looks aren’t everything. Like I said before, even though Bella’s not fit for a grown-up Ellie, there’s nothing wrong with their acting skills. The main problem of the second season lies in the writing and the way it’s adapting The Last of Us Part 2.

What went wrong with The Last of Us Season 2?

When you look at the source material it’s adapting, you’ll realise that The Last of Us Season 2 was bound to be hated no matter what. However, there are glaring problems present that have no connection to the casting or the acting. First off, the writing is just not as good as the games, and it feels like Neil Druckmann is scared of his creation.

Lack of subtexts, spoon-feeding audiences every bit of information, order of scenes being way different from the game are some of the few problems this season suffers from. Not to mention changing important scenes like Joel talking to a therapist about Ellie instead of his brother Tommy, having Abby blurt out her entire revenge motive to Joel before he gets killed, Dina being there instead of Tommy during Joel’s killing, among other examples.

The most recent episode had the porch scene between Joel and Ellie, which was supposed to be the penultimate scene, as it is at the very end of the game, providing closure to their relationship before his death. It hits harder in the game because we get to know that Ellie tried forgiving Joel the night before he died, and by the time we get to that cutscene, she has lost everything.

Changes like this have bogged down the second season overall, and with more seasons on the way, all I hope is that it takes more cues from the second game.
