Harvey volunteers break bread at community breakfast to celebrate the start of National Volunteer Week

Volunteers from across the Shire of Harvey came together on Monday morning to celebrate their achievements as National Volunteer Week begins.

More than 100 volunteers from all walks of life gathered in the newly renovated Harvey Connect building, formerly the Harvey Senior Citizens Centre, to enjoy a community breakfast courtesy of Lotterywest and Volunteering WA.

Harvey Connect member Brian Kealley said it was the first time the event had been hosted for volunteers within the community.

He said is was uplifting to see so many people in attendance, though recognised volunteering was becoming more difficult for so many.

“I’m sure all the other organisations are the same, we are all facing the same problems, we are an ageing population and the younger ones aren’t coming through in the extent that we came through when we were their age,” he said.

“Life’s changed, people having families longer, both parents have to work — all those sorts of things.”

Mr Kealley said the breakfast was a recognition of the hard work and dedication of so many, often with nothing in return.

With so many different institutions at the event, Mr Kealley said he couldn’t thank them all individually because he was sure he would miss someone out, but thanked them as a whole instead.

“I’m overwhelmed by the amount of people that have come,” he said.

“Today, we’ve brought volunteers from all walks of life, and have a look at where we all come from, and have a look at the money we save the government by doing what they should do.”
