Hidetaka Miyazaki May Have Used One of the Toughest, Crazy Aggro Dual Swords Dark Souls Boss as the Template

If you’ve made it to the bitter end of Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC and gotten completely destroyed by Promised Consort Radahn, you’re not alone. Most consider the final boss of the DLC to be one of the hardest bosses in Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoftware’s history. But if you take a second to look at the fight closely, you might be surprised at what you find.

For longtime Soulsborne fans, Consort Radahn’s fighting style seems familiar. Some players even dodged his move like they’d already faced him before. That’s because Radahn’s design seems to have been inspired by Dark Souls 3‘s Pontiff Sulyvahn, who is also considered one of the hardest bosses in Soulsborne history.

If you haven’t played Dark Souls 3 yet, well, the first thing is that you should. It’s great. But the other thing is that Pontiff Sulyvahn is a boss in the game, and considered one of the hardest that FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki have ever made. Found in the icy cathedral of Irithyll of the Boreal Valley, Sulyvahn is one of the most aggressive bosses you’ll fight in the entire game.

He weilds the Profaned Greatsword and the Greatsword of Judgment, and forces players to constantly stay on their toes with his unrelenting, dual-sword assault. Not only does he have combos with big hitboxes, but he also has a second phase transition where he summons a spectral clone to attack us. It’s really a nonstop dance of dodging and countering, a dance which is eerily similar to another fight.

We fast forward to Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, where we faced a similar type of moveset. But this time it’s from the hands of Promised Consort Radahn, the DLC’s final boss. Radahn has always been a fan-favorite since his appearance in the base game, but the way he attacks us and his terrifying pressure screams “Pontiff Sulyvahn 2.0.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen FromSoftware take inspiration from its past. The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is filled with nods to previous titles. The ****** Knights make a spiritual return. The Church District’s draining mechanics are a callback to New Londo Ruins. The Cerulean Coast gives us the same vibes as Dark Souls’ Tomb of the Giants. And so forth.

And of course, the difficulty speaks for itself. Players are calling this fight even harder than Malenia, and with good reason. The speed, reach, and unpredictability of Radahn’s dual-blade attacks require you to be quick and perceptive. Otherwise, you’ll never be able to dodge his attacks.

It’s clear that Consort Radahn is meant to symbolize the culmination of FromSoftware’s entire legacy. Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team knew exactly what they were doing. He is the spiritual successor to some of the most iconic Soulsborne bosses. No wonder he’s so tough.
