Albany Boardriders seek surfing tales to feature in commemorative ‘zines heralding opening of Midds Reef

Albany Boardriders are seeking community contributions to be collated into a series of ‘zines to commemorate the opening of the Southern Ocean Surf Reef.

Boardriders’ youth development officer Natasha Williams is calling on anyone who has a surfing story to document it for inclusion in the publications.

Submissions close on Wednesday, May 28 with the club’s youth members set to curate the final products.

Ms Williams said submissions could be stories, art works, board art or pictures.

“We are just seeking to reflect the persistent, adventurous, creative and activist surf culture that has enlivened our South Coast and eventually reached this point in our history,” she said.

“Almost everyone in the city has a surfing tale.

“Even when I went to get a quote from the printers, they told me so many stories I pleaded with them to share them.”

She asked that any written contributions be in legible handwriting or typed while art pieces should be sent in high resolution jpeg or pdf format.

The zines should be ready by mid-June in time for the official opening of the reef.
