St. Louis braces for more severe weather; recovery ongoing

ST. LOUIS — More severe weather is in the forecast for St. Louis this week. This may disrupt recovery efforts in an area of the city devastated by a likely tornado that touched down Friday and killed five people.

“We estimate over a billion dollars in property damage. This does not account for the personal human toll that this has taken in our community,” said Mayor Cara Spencer.

Mayor Cara Spencer notes during a Sunday press conference that people should prepare for the heavy rain and damaging winds. The focus of the effort is switching from rescue to preserving property. The fire department and the regional response team have completed their sweep of the area, including 3,800 buildings.

Large regional contractors are working with the city on short-term storm preparation and long-term neighborhood restoration. They are working on the next steps in the long recovery.

Firefighters say some people are coming to the area to take pictures of the damage. They are warning people that the area is very dangerous and to stay away. There may be downed electrical wires, nails, and other hazards.

Police say that officers are also working 12-hour shifts to keep the damaged area and the rest of the city safe. The 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is being enforced in the 5th and 6th police districts. So far there have been no reports of looting.

The American Red Cross is working to help with relief. One of their shelters is completely full, and they are working to open another one. If you need assistance call 1-800-733-2767.

St. Louis Emergency Management asks that people prepare for the next round of storms.
