Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan hoped the move would ease financial pressure on families, revealing it could save them up to $755, the equivalent cost of a student public transport pass. The policy will be funded in the 2025/26 Victorian budget, set to be unveiled on Tuesday. Children will need to apply for a new youth myki card, which will cover travel on the state’s trams, trains, buses and coach services. The changes are set to take effect from January 1 next year. “We’re making it easier for Victorian families with free public transport for under 18s, anywhere in Victoria. Every child, every day, everywhere,” Ms Allan said. “It’s just one way we’re supporting Victorians with the cost of living. Because we’re focused on what matters most.” On Saturday, the government announced seniors would be eligible for free travel across the entire ****** transport network on weekends from next year. The move was an expansion of the current policy, which covered travel within two neighbouring zones, allowing for short trips such as from Morwell to Traralgon. Ms Allan maintained the government would hand down a “responsible” budget on Tuesday, supporting frontline services including schools, hospitals and police. “Following the responsible decisions we know we need to make, (we will) have every dollar invested in those frontline services,” she said on Saturday.
