Metacritic’s Worst Rated Game Publisher Can Make a Comeback With This Single-Player That’s on ***** in Steam

No one wants to be called the worst. But someone’s got to wear the disgraced crown, and for 2024, Metacritic handed that honor to Fulqrum Publishing. In its 15th Annual Game Publisher Rankings, using nothing but critic reviews, the site declared Fulqrum the lowest-ranked publisher of the year. Yikes.

But every horror story needs a twist, and in Fulqrum’s case, that twist may come in the form of their dark, atmospheric single-player title, Stygian: Outer Gods. Currently in Early Access and on ***** on Steam, this eerie Lovecraftian experience might just be the redemption arc the studio needs.

Fulqrum Publishing: From rough rankings to rising potential

With rankings out, it would be an understatement to say that Fulqrum had a bumpy 2024. With a modest average Metascore of 71.1 and only one “good” title by critic standards (Forgive Me Father 2 for PC, which got an 83 score), the publisher ended up dead last out of 37 eligible companies in the

.

Other titles released under the publisher’s banner in 2024 didn’t fare much better. While none were considered outright “bad”, they failed to impress the critics overall. Games like Dread Templar and Supreme Ruler 2030 had promise, but failed to climb on the good side of critics and players.

But now enters Stygian: Outer Gods, a standalone title set in the same universe as Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones. This new release takes players to the fog-choked, secret-laden town of Kingsport, just before the apocalyptic “****** Day.”

Players take on a story-rich journey involving shipwrecks, occult investigations, and unraveling cosmic horrors. To survive in this ratched world, you need to craft much-needed remedies and battle grotesque monsters, to make critical choices that will shape the narrative.

It’s safe to say, Stygian: Outer Gods is full of potential. Its detailed environments offer a haunting backdrop to a game where your mind is just as vulnerable as your health. It’s not just about fighting back. It’s about staying sane while doing so.

A second chance in Metacritic’s harsh system

Getting onto Metacritic’s annual publisher list isn’t easy. The platform only includes publishers that release at least five distinct, critic-reviewed titles in a year. Fulqrum barely qualified in 2024 with five distinct titles, but that also means they’re in the game, even if they’re last.

This matters because now all eyes are on Fulqrum and whether it can break free from that bottom rank. And based on early impressions, Stygian: Outer Gods may be the spark the publisher needs.

The game has drawn attention from fans of the resurging Lovecraft horror genre, which has seen a bump in quality and popularity over the past few years.

Sure, the game is in Early Access, and yes, it’s not fully complete. But what’s there already shows promise and passion. The developers have shared a roadmap, and if they deliver on it, the final version of the game could be something memorable.

So if you’re craving a single-player horror RPG with depth, dread, and decision-making, now’s a great time to check out Stygian: Outer Gods. And while you’re at it, give feedback; the developers are listening, and your input could help shape what might be Fulqrum Publishing’s most important title yet.
