‘Nintendo’s Worst Nightmare’ Open World Game Gets Massive 25% Discount on Steam

Palworld is undoubtedly one of the more ‘controversial’ games to have landed last year. This creature-collecting game takes a ton of inspiration from the Pokémon series of video games, and blends with it survival elements to create an interesting, but addictive formula.

For the uninitiated, Palworld was released almost one and a half years ago, on January 19, 2024, for both PC and console. Now, it would appear that Steam is offering a respectable 25% discount on the game, as part of its ‘Steam Creature Collector Fest’ campaign.

Pocketpair’s Palworld is available at only $22.49 on Steam

Steam has recently unveiled its Creature Collector Fest, a server-wide event which offers discounts on a variety of creature-themed titles. All sorts of games are included within this *****, ranging from the World of Final Fantasy, Cult of the Lamb, to Palworld.

All games share a common theme – capturing and taming fantastical creatures and partaking in epic battles with them. Palworld is arguably the most popular entry within this list, part of which has to do with the recent controversy it found itself in.

For those who don’t already know, the game draws in some heavy inspiration from Pokémon, and features ‘Pals’ which can be traded, collected, and put to work, helping you survive against the brutal game world.

It is particularly this likeness for which the game was (often unfairly) criticized, which ultimately culminated in an intervention and lawsuit from Nintendo against Pocketpair.

Pocketpair ultimately decided not to engage in legal battles with Nintendo, resulting in certain mechanics being drastically changed within the game. Despite this setback, Palworld managed to garner an impressive player base within a few short weeks of its launch.

Feeling the heat from the competition, Nintendo unfortunately managed to sink a sizable hole in the ship of their worst nightmare, and gaming is likely never to remain the same. 

However, Palworld has a strong chance at revival, more so when we take into account its massive 25% discount. The game is being sold at $22.49 and includes a complete collection of all the content released thus far. The ***** is only valid till May 19, so it might be a good idea to make haste and grab the game at your earliest.

Palworld will return to its original price of $29.99 once May 20 arrives.

Palworld borrows elements from Pokémon, but is a very different game altogether

It is no secret that many of Palworld’s Pal designs (and game mechanics) seem like a blatant rip-off of the Pokémon series of video games. This had generated a lot of controversy back in January 2024, but many of these can be excused as creative interpretations.

After all, it is in no way an exact 1:1 copy of Pokémon. First off, the game is an open-world survival crafting title, and has many mechanics that are a staple of the genre.

Furthermore, its use of guns and gratuitous amounts of violence is not exactly something that is a staple of the Pokémon series either.  Palworld is an early access title as well, and is set to receive updates over time, which is not something Pokémon games are built around either.

There are way too many differences to point out within this list, but Palworld is most certainly not a Pokémon clone in any shape or form.
