Tina Glasson’s patience pays dividends as mum comes out of retirement to win

It might have only been a 46+ rated 1920m event at York on a Thursday, but Norma Stars’ victory was a story of saint-like patience from trainer Tina Glasson as the mare recorded a long-awaited win.

The name Norma is Latin for “rule” or “standard”, though there has been anything but elementary about this eight-year-old’s odyssey.

Beginning her career in 2019 under Victorian trainer Greg Eurell, Norma Stars cracked her maiden at just her second start when leading throughout to score at Seymour.

Given the authority of victory, the daughter of Zoustar lined up next in a Listed 1100m dash at Flemington and was beaten three and a half lengths by Wayupinthesky.

No other horse from that race has been seen at the track in three years and after winning in July 2020, Norma Stars was also retired to stud duties just one run later.

But after being sold once for $2,000 from Victoria to Ridgeport Farm in WA, Norma Stars was then sold for $600 to Glasson when the new owner passed away.

“I bought her in the broodmare section of a Magic Millions *****. I saw a picture of her online and thought, ‘she’s had a good history, we’ll give her another crack’,” Glasson said.

“She had a real nice shape about her and when I bought her, she’d had 12 starts for a couple of firsts and a couple of seconds.

“The foal was weaned in December, and I think she went on ***** the following September. I just put her straight into work as soon as I got her.

“She was still only young, but I had trouble with Racing Australia, and it looked like I wouldn’t be able to race her. I had to get permission from the daughter of the previous owner.”

The resultant offspring of Norma Stars is now under the care of local trainer Kayla Farrell and has had one educational preparation.

On Thursday and almost five years since that last victory, Norma Stars sat midfield with a rails-hugging ride from Jason Whiting.

Rounding the turn, the pair had leader Lakeview Lightning in their sights and soon gobbled the gelding up, racing away to a four-and-a-half length rout.

“She’s always been a good little money-spinner for me, though she hasn’t had a win (until now),” Glasson said.

“I never thought about giving up. I don’t have very good horses; she’s the best one.

“I’ve got four in work but I’m a very small trainer; it’s too much, really.”

Glasson also had Pavliani run an encouraging fourth at the meeting, another ex-Victorian mare who too was purchased for $600 from a broodmare *****.

In a further act of symmetry, Norma Stars’ success marked almost a year to the day since Glasson produced Pavliani to win at York for her first win out of retirement.
