Prime Minister Anthony Albanese gifts Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s cat Bobby a red scarf

Australia’s relations with Indonesia have taken a twist with Anthony Albanese gifting President Prabowo Subianto’s cat Bobby a red scarf.

The Prime Minister shared photos of the exchange on X thanking the president and his cat for their warm welcome.

He also posted a picture of his dog Toto wearing a similar red scarf embossed with “Toto (heart) Bobby” and another scarf he gave the president’s cat which read “Australia (heart) Indonesia.”

Indonesian press Antara reported the prime minister and president were wearing matching brown batik shirts during an official dinner which was held at the Subianto’s residence.

Subianto’s cat was wheeled out in a stroller labelled ‘Bobby Kertanegara,’ and was dressed in a brown batik outfit.

Bobby was placed next to the Prime Minister, who held the cat and was applauded by everyone in the room before he put the scarf on Bobby and gave him some cat treats, it was reported.

It was the prime minister’s first official overseas trip since being re-elected on May 3.

During the two-day visit, Mr Albanese emphasised the importance of the bilateral relationship.

“I have come to our region first because our region comes first,” Mr Albanese said.

“I am here in Indonesia because no relationship is more important to Australia than this one.

“And no nation is more important to the prosperity, security and stability of the Indo-Pacific than Indonesia.”

Mr Albanese thanked President Subianto “for the extraordinary welcome and generosity in which we have been received here”.

“It has been an extraordinary honour for me to represent the country that I love, here in the region that we share and that we both love,” Mr Albanese said.

“Thank you Mr President and I look forward to continuing to build on our relationship on a personal level but importantly as well to build on the relationship between our two nations.”
