Ubisoft’s Rumored Plan for Far Cry 7 Will Ruin Longtime Fans

Ubisoft had some news to share at the company’s recent earnings call, and Far Cry fans are probably hit the hardest. The publisher announced that it will be delaying its biggest games, including the long-awaited Far Cry 7, into 2026 and beyond. This move comes after we witnessed the recent success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which was also delayed.

On paper, it’s a move meant to boost quality. But for us, the delay isn’t the biggest problem. It’s the possibility that when the next Far Cry game does arrive, it may be unrecognizable from the franchise we’ve grown to love. With the recent dealings with Tencent, there’s no telling where Ubisoft is headed.

that several of its “biggest productions” had been postponed beyond the 2025 fiscal year, extending into FY 2026-27 and FY 2027-28. While no titles were explicitly named, CEO Yves Guillemot highlighted franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, The Division, and Ghost Recon as central to this strategic delay.

Additionally, after a review of our pipeline, we have decided to provide additional development time to some of our biggest productions in order to create the best conditions for success. As a consequence, FY2026-27 and FY2027-28 will see significant content coming from our largest brands.

The publisher has already formed a new Tencent-backed subsidiary to handle its biggest IPs, including Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and Assassin’s Creed. With $1.25 billion in funding and a focus on pushing into “underpenetrated markets” like China, what could this mean for Far Cry 7? Will the game be affected by Tencent’s typical touch and become a multiplayer live-service game full of microtransactions?

To be fair, there is reason to believe Ubisoft’s focus on quality might lead to a more refined and less buggy experience. We have seen games from Ubisoft that could’ve used more time in the oven to fix bugs and other issues. But for Far Cry, the concern isn’t just whether it will be polished, it’s about whether it will feel like a Far Cry game at all? We don’t know anything yet.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows delivered the 2nd highest day one sales revenue in the franchise history behind Valhalla.

It also set a day one Ubisoft performance record on PSN. The company expects it to contribute “strongly” to its FY2025-26.

reports that Far Cry 7 has been internally delayed to the end of 2026, placing it well beyond the current fiscal year ending March 2026. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that the decision to push games back was because of the commercial and critical success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which launched in March 2025 after multiple delays.

The newest addition to the Assassin’s Creed franchise is one of Ubisoft’s best games in the last 5 years. And it makes sense that it served as the blueprint for this new, quality-first development approach. We can’t really fault the studio for seeing what worked this year and trying to repeat it. But that isn’t to say that the delay doesn’t *****.

While Assassin’s Creed Shadows showed what a delay can change in terms of game quality, it’s not a perfect comparison. We don’t think that Far Cry‘s style and world would necessarily benefit from getting delayed. To make matters worse, there has been zero communication from Ubisoft about the direction of Far Cry 7.

With no new games in the Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, or Ghost Recon franchises, the next 12 months will rely on smaller projects like Anno 117: Pax Romana, the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, and mobile spin-offs like Rainbow Six Mobile and The Division Resurgence.
