Doom: The Dark Ages Has 9 Major Post-Installation Issues

Doom: The Dark Ages is finally out for PCs, at least in the form of early access. While the game formally launches tomorrow, May 15, 2025, there do seem to be certain issues plaguing the game in the launch version of its code.

These post-installation issues appear to be quite widespread and affect mostly Nvidia users thus far. Other affected sections include general progression and trophies. Thankfully, developer id Software has released a day one patch for everyone. Some issues are still persistent, though, which can be found discussed below (along with their fixes).

id Software drops a massive list of known PC-specific bugs for Doom: The Dark Ages

As detailed within the official Steam page for Doom: The Dark Ages, id Software has already identified a list of several, persistent issues across the game.

These issues are due to be patched out very soon, and include both performance and progression-related bugs, many of which can be attributed to driver issues (and the fact that the game is yet to receive this Day 1 patch).

More on these targeted bug fixes below:

1) Nvidia-specific bugs

Nvidia’s latest RTX 5000 series has not been well received by the public, and Doom: The Dark Ages’ problems make things a whole lot worse this time around.

In particular, the newest drivers for Nvidia (576.40, as of the time of writing this article) are known to be quite unstable and may result in crashes and strange glitches.

The known issues thus far (specific to Nvidia hardware) are as follows:

  • Enabling G-Sync and/or V-Sync Multi Frame Generation with an Nvidia RTX 5000 series card will ****** the game.
  • Playing the game with an RTX 4000 or RTX 5000 class GPU will show V-Sync as enabled, once you have Frame Generation toggled on – even when V-Sync is disabled. This is a minor bug and does not affect gameplay or performance in any way.
  • Alt-Tabbing while launching the game might make it launch in background, and remain completely inaccessible. Avoid Alt-Tabbing during launch for now.
  • Starting a gameplay recording using Shadowplay (with Multi-Frame Generation set to 3x or 4x) will ****** or even lock up the entire system. Avoid using Shadowplay for now on RTX 5000 GPUs. Older generation GPUs are unaffected.
  • Swapping to fullscreen (using Alt-Tab) while recording with OBS may result in the game locking up and freezing. Players will likely have to wait for a fix from either OBS, or switch to Fullscreen or Borderless Fullscreen mode for now.

2) AMD-specific bugs

AMD’s FSR implementation hasn’t really been the greatest (especially when compared to DLSS), and The Dark Ages’ usage of Frame Generation has some rather odd behaviour:

  • The game can lock up while resizing its window when AMD’s FSR Frame Generation is left enabled. Avoid resizing windows manually with FSR frame gen on.

3) Intel CPU specific bugs

Intel’s issues with its 13th and 14th generation of CPUs strike again for Doom: The Dark Ages, and there seems to be no other solution than to have the CPU entirely replaced for now. There is exactly one issue pertaining to Intel hardware at the moment:

  • Running the game on Intel CPUs of the 13th or 14th generation might result in persistent crashing. This is likely a hardware issue, and cannot be resolved with bug fixes.

4) Other miscellaneous bugs

These bugs are likely to be fixed short-term and are not vendor-specific. More on these two issues below:

  • Unplugging your secondary monitor while playing the game might cause it to freeze. Those without multi-monitor setups should be unaffected.
  • The game may run into stability-related issues while using either the MSI Afterburner and/or Rivatuner overlays. Consider using alternative overlays for the time being (the built-in Windows Xbox Game Bar is a decent substitute).

Most of these issues seem to be driver-specific, and readers might have to wait until AMD and Nvidia release patches that target the same. Updated drivers should be made available soon, and are recommended to be installed as soon as possible.

Those with Nvidia GPUs might find it better not to update drivers for the time being. Alternatively, consider rolling back your drivers to the prior stable version using software such as DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).
