Anthony Mackie not only returned to the silver screen this year as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World but is also making his return to the small screen as the Milkman, John Doe, in Twisted Metal. The adaptation of the popular video game series got great reviews for its first season and was renewed for a second season in 2023.

The makers recently announced the release date for the sophomore season of Twisted Metal, which sees some familiar faces as well as some new ones that are exciting not just for fans of the game but also of the show. While Mackie returns as John Doe in the show, some exciting casting additions make it one of the anticipated series of the year.

Based on the popular vehicular combat video game of the same name, Twisted Metal is set in a post-apocalyptic world where machines and the Internet have become obsolete. The world is a wasteland that is a free-for-all. It centers on a deliveryman, John Doe, who suffers from amnesia and has fleeting memories of his family before he is separated from them.

Doe is tasked with delivering a mysterious package in exchange for a life of comfort, and on the way, he meets a variety of deranged characters. On his journey, he crosses paths with Quiet, a former criminal who is on the hunt for a police officer, Agent Stone, who killed her brother, Loud. They also come across a psychotic clown named Sweet Tooth.

Anthony Mackie plays John, who did not really have a backstory in the games. The Sony games usually just involved the combat (which we will see in Season 2), and the show crafted backstories for the characters, including Sweet Tooth.

We had a great group of writers, and John’s backstory was very important. Just simply because you have to think of and create all that stuff now, to where when you go into hopefully the next season or the third season, you have all that stuff written for you to build upon.

The actor also reportedly did many of the stunts on his own, including driving inside a mall and jumping out of windows. Mackie said that there was a large group of stunt drivers for protection, and some of the more dangerous stunts were taken care of by the professionals.

While Season 1 established the world of Twisted Metal and saw John battle a wide range of marauders, the second season actually sees him compete in the demolition derby races that are widely covered in the games. It also introduces a legendary character from the games.

Peacock posted an announcement video a few weeks ago revealing the show’s release date: Season 2 will arrive on July 31, 2025. The video shows Anthony Carrigan’s Calypso slowly and dramatically opening the garage door in the derby tournament.

Anthony Mackie, who will be a participant, wonders aloud if Calypso really has to wait till the door opens all the way to make an entrance, while Stephanie Beatriz’s Quiet admires his showmanship. A short montage of the races, filled with explosions and violence, ensues.

Sweet Tooth also makes an appearance, loving the races and free rein to kill. As he says, it is his kind of party. Fans seemed to be excited not just for the races but also for the introduction of several favorite characters like Mr. Grimm, Axel, and Dollface.

Anthony Mackie returns as John Doe in the second season of Twisted Metal. Though not a ‘Milkman’ anymore, John hopes to find Quiet after she sacrifices her chance at a good life for him and leaves him on the other side of the settlement in New San Francisco. Mackie also has to compete in the derby this year on behalf of Raven.

He’s going to have some challenges that’s gonna come his way that’s gonna force his hand to be more of an adult and make some really tough decisions because you can’t be a milkman all your life. We’ve seen what happens to milkmen. So you have to decide what’s most important — hold your milkman status, or grow up and be an adult.

Stephanie Beatriz returns as John’s partner in crime, Quiet. At the end of season one, Quiet shoots John in the shoulder to make sure that he gets a spot inside the New San Francisco settlement and heads out into the wasteland again, where she is attacked by a group of female marauders headed by Dollface, John’s long-lost sister.

Tiana Okoye plays Dollface in Season 2. Joe Seanoa plays the physical version of the killer clown, Sweet Tooth, in the show and returns for season 2. Will Arnett, who is also an executive producer on the series, voices him. Other new additions to the cast include Richard de Klerk, Lisa Gilroy, Patty Guggenheim, and Michael James Shaw.

One of the biggest additions to the cast is Anthony Carrigan as the legendary Mr. Calypso. The iconic creator of the derby games and its host. The first teaser of season 2 revealed the first look of Carrigan as Calypso. The Barry star looks interesting, with a long wig on his usually bald head. The actor will also be playing a role in Superman this year.

Twisted Metal Season 2 is set to premiere on Peacock on July 31, 2025.
