Rockstar is Not Just Working on GTA 4 Remaster (Rumor)

GTA 6 has been the main point of attention for anything Rockstar Games in the last few years. But did you know that the company could be preparing a double hit of nostalgia with a Max Payne 3 Remaster? At least that’s what these new rumors say. Rumors suggest that we could get a GTA 4 remaster too.

This is on top of the fact that Remedy Entertainment is currently working on remakes for the first two Max Payne games. So if this rumor is true, Rockstar is planning on completing the trilogy. Fans like to complain about remasters, but you know what? We think it’s perfect for gaps like this because we’re all waiting for GTA 6.

Rockstar might be cooking a Max Payne 3 and GTA 4 remasters

According to multiple posts from Tez2 on the

over the past week, Rockstar’s plan to revisit older titles dates back to what he calls the “pandemic days.” This internal roadmap reportedly included remasters or ports of both GTA 4 and Max Payne 3. And it makes more sense for them to release now since we’ve just gotten the announcement for the GTA 6 delay.

RUMOR: Rockstar is claimed to be remastering both Max Payne 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV🚀

Max Payne 3 remaster is also claimed to launch around Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes by Remedy.

Which one do want more?

The Max Payne 3 remaster is expected to arrive not long after the GTA 4 remaster, which may launch as early as late 2025. Remedy Entertainment is already working on full remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2, so adding the third title would let us experience the entire trilogy together in a modern setting.

Originally released in 2012, Max Payne 3 made some pretty big changes from the first two. These were mostly because the development went from Remedy to Rockstar. Despite criticism over its story and tonal shift, the game pushed Xbox 360 and PS3 hardware to their limits and had good qualities, like the surprisingly fun multiplayer.

Tez2 also noted that the development of both remasters was less prioritized following the disastrous reception of The Definitive Edition in 2021. But the inevitable delay of GTA 6 may have shifted Rockstar’s focus back to them. Since Red Dead Redemption received a faithful port by Double Eleven in 2023, we can hope that GTA 4 and Max Payne 3 get the same treatment.

It’s the right time to jump on the remake and remaster bandwagon

Tez2 first mentioned Rockstar’s internal plans for a new port back in 2022, although at the time it appeared the company had shelved the project after the poor reception to the Trilogy remasters. But the situation right now feels very similar to what we saw from Rockstar before previous re-releases, suggesting development may now be well underway.

We still don’t know how Rockstar will allocate resources for these remasters while its studios focus on finishing GTA 6, which is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious open-world games ever made. Still, like we said, big studios can always ask for help from smaller ones, it doesn’t even sacrifice quality. Look at what Virtuos did for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

As of now, Rockstar has not confirmed any plans related to Max Payne 3 or GTA 4 remasters. As usual, we are relying on rumors and insider information because of the company’s tight-lipped approach. We can expect to see details of Remedy’s Max Payne remakes at the Summer Game Fest in June.
