The first reports came in Tuesday morning. Brandon Grantham with Grandview police said he saw the ****** bear run across main street at about 5:45 Tuesday morning. He followed it to the dumpster at Taco Bell and called police. Then, the bear disappeared. “I have done this job for 20 years, 19 of it in Grandview. i tell people like, ‘Hey, it’s a job that no day is ever the same.’ Today’s a perfect example,” Grantham said. “I’ve never ran into anything like this. Giant dogs, armadillos, raccoons in people’s houses, bats and all that, but never a bear.” The bear was then spotted near 13th and Skyline. According to the city, Animal Control officers immediately reached out to the Department of Conservation and confirmed the bear sighting. “I’m like, vindication, validation, we have it, see,” Grantham said. “Because everybody was like, ‘No way. It’s a big dog, you don’t know what you’re seeing.’ It was a 100% a bear.” ****** bear in Grandview, Missouri, on May 13, 2025. “The bear is not believed to be a danger to the public unless provoked,” said NeighborhoodServices Supervisor Amy Nash, “So, if you see the bear, immediately call 911 so we can contactconservation agents.” It’s unknown if the bear has cubs, but the Missouri Department of Conservation tells Grandview Animal Control that it’s very unlikely for it to have crossed the interstate. Second area bear sighting in two days It’s unclear if these are the same bears, but FOX4 received tips from viewers about a bear sighting in Johnson County. We obtained surveillance video from the Grass Pad in south Johnson County of a bear roaming its property. The Grass Pad is located off of 69 Highway on 199th Street near Stilwell. “There goes a bear across the street,” Lisa Kobularcik said. She and her partner were headed to the Grass Pad Sunday evening when they saw the bear cross the road and snapped a photo. “You’ve gotta have a photo or it didn’t happen,” Kobularcik said. She reported it to police and the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks. They confirmed to FOX4 — it is a ****** bear. A spokesperson from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks said they are aware of the reports of ****** bears and are looking into the details. The department reports that although ****** bear sightings have increased since 2000 due to established populations of ****** bears within short distances of Kansas, ****** bears have only been documented occasionally since the 1880s.
