Manjimup local aims to raise awareness and funds for cystic fibrosis after new lease on life

A Manjimup woman living with cystic fibrosis is raising awareness about the life-threatening disorder ahead of 65 Roses Day.

Cindy Watterson lives with the genetic condition but benefits from a range of research and treatment options, something the Statewide campaign to raise funds supports.

Almost a decade ago, Ms Watterson believed she would not make it to 50, but this year, she is set to reach that milestone birthday.

“There are still scars, and survivor guilt is very real — some of my friends with CF are having lung, liver and kidney transplants, hospital admissions for pneumonia and here I am living relatively healthily,” she said.

Ms Watterson said her life was changed with new treatment, and is raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis WA through 65 Roses Day on May 22.

A chef in the past, Ms Watterson now works as a disability carer to help others.

“I’m holding myself a surprise 50th birthday in August . . . surprised that I have made it to be able to have a 50th,” she said.

“I had a big 40th, and everyone showed up also assuming this would be my last milestone birthday.

CFWA aims to sell thousands of fresh and digital roses to support people living with cystic fibrosis, with $2 million recently pledged to fund WA-based research this year.
